Shopping addiction: why we can't resist Black Friday sales

Will PasioOnline have special sales around Black Friday? It is a question that has been going through my head even more often than it was asked for by customers.
As little as ten years ago, barely any retailer participated in the Black Friday craze, except some tourist oriented store in Amsterdam.
Now? It has quickly become the norm, even though very few people realize how this special day came about: the habit of Americans to take a precious day off after one of their most sacred holidays: Thanksgiving, which happens each last Thursday of November. On that day, it is a habit to say thanks for a succesful harvest. Massive amounts of people take a day off in order to either travel long distances to their family to celebrate or, prepare for the upcoming December month by buying a tree and presents.

Over time the rather innocent and even charming habit has become heavily commercialized, so much so that quite a lot of people decide to go on a buying strike on this particular day. This may be harder than it sounds as marketing teams work together to lure you in to buy more than you actually need.
What's the reason why we overconsume? In my mind, the main reason is the dopamine rush one gets from buying something beautiful or special.
For a number of years, I had become addicted to buying myself nail polish after a particularly stressful day. Buying something that looks pretty made me feel good too. It took quite a while to redirect that habit into either pouring myself a nice cup of tea or coffee or take a milk shake prior to going to the gym.

If you don't know what dopamine is or does, you may want to read more about the dopamine rush, or when you think to need help or simply want more background information.
Dopamine can be a very positive thing, so you may want to know how to increase dopamine levels naturally.

Supplements that may enhance dopamine levels are :

  • Curcumin, the active ingredient in our favorite curry spice turmeric, helps increase levels of dopamine
  • Ginkgo Biloba is a popular wonder drug and though it’s not proven, it might help increase dopamine levels by making it stay in your brain longer
  • L-theanine increases neurotransmitter production in your brain, one of which is dopamine. Green tea has lots of this, though it can also be taken as a theanine supplement
  • Acetyl-l-tyrosine is a production-ready version of tyrosine which will make it easier for your brain to create dopamine.
