Jarrow Formulas Saccharomyces boulardii +MOS is a probiotic yeast that survives stomach acid and colonizes the intestinal tract. It promotes the health of the intestinal tract, helps protect its beneficial microbiota, and enhances immune function. MOS (MannanOligoSaccharide) is an oligosaccharide from the cell walls of Saccharomyces cerevisiae that can prevent bacteria from adhering to the epithelial cells and reduce their proliferation.

who can benefit from Saccharomyces boulardii +MOS?
Individuals who are in greater need for intestinal protection, including individuals who travel or utilize antibiotics, may benefit from Saccharomyces Boulardii + MOS
In addition, individuals with sensitive bowel function may also benefit from using Saccharomyces.

what distinguishes Saccharomyces boulardii +MOS?
• one of the best substantiated probiotics traveller's &antibiotic-associated diarrhea
• does not need to be refrigerated
• probiotic yeast: can be taken with bacterial probiotics like Jarrodophilus
• not affected by antibiotics
• dairy-free
• includes MOS: unfriendly bacteria anchor decoy

how do the active ingredients function in Saccharomyces boulardii +MOS?
Saccharomyces boulardii may decrease the incidence of occasional diarrhea from multiple causes, and promote comfort in those with a sensitive/irritable bowel
MOS may block the attachment of unfriendly microorganisms to the intestinal lining

background reading
In the natural health world, the term “yeast” is typically associated in a positive way with “brewer’s/nutritional” yeast, or in a negative way with Candida albicans (i.e., as in yeast infections). One association that is not commonly made is “probiotic.” Nevertheless, that’s exactly what Saccharomyces boulardii is, a beneficial yeast used as a probiotic agent to support gastrointestinal health. Its most important use is when intestinal flora come under assault, such as during antibiotic use or when traveling.

Saccharomyces boulardii typically reaches a maximum steady state in 3 days when taken orally, but does not multiply in the gut. Less than one percent of the ingested dose is recovered from stools, indicating that supplementation with Saccharomyces boulardii should take place regularly to achieve continuing benefits.

Occasional diarrhea
Saccharomyces boulardii is particularly effective in relation to diarrhea from various causes. The efficacy of taking Saccharomyces boulardii orally has been demonstrated in reducing traveler’s diarrhea, antibiotic-associated diarrhea and some other forms of diarrhea.

In fact, meta-analyses of the pooled results from studies suggest that Saccharomyces boulardii can decrease the relative risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhea by 57% to 63%. Saccharomyces boulardii is thought to provide help by producing proteases that may decrease the toxicity of C. diffi cile toxins A and B. Saccharomyces boulardii has also been shown to be effective orally for occasional acute diarrhea.

Hypersensitive bowel
Individuals with a hypersensitive bowel may experience more inflammatory episodes and frequent bowel movements. The recurrence of such episodes may be reduced by taking 1 gram of Saccharomyces boulardii daily. Other evidence shows that taking 250 mg Saccharomyces boulardii three times daily can maintain better lower intestinal health.

Skin health
Although secondary to its effects on gastrointestinal health, Saccharomyces boulardii may benefit skin health. In a randomized, controlled double-blind study involving 139 patients with acne, the effectiveness and tolerance of Saccharomyces boulardii was studied in comparison with a placebo over a maximum period of five months. The results of therapy were assessed as very good/good in 74.3% of the patients receiving the preparation, as compared with 21.7% in the placebo group.

More than 80% of the people in the S. boulardii group were judged to be considerably or completely improved, while the corresponding figure for the placebo group was only 26%.

Mannan-Oligosaccharides
Adding mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS) provides enhanced support to the intestinal tract by acting as anchor site decoys to unfriendly bacteria. Mannans have specific structures that are recognized by immune cells. They exist on cell surfaces or membranes as the primary antigenic or immunereactive components of whole yeast cells and cell walls.

MOS are long-chain, non-digestible, complex carbohydrates that look like the mannans expressed on cells that line the digestive tract. Certain non-probiotic bacteria recognize these cell surface molecules and use them to attach to the intestinal lining. MOS-bound bacteria are excreted out of the body with little or no chance for proliferation in the intestines. By ingesting MOS, this microbial attachment mechanism can be interfered with. Unfriendly bacteria bind to the ingested MOS hoping to get a foothold in the intestines, but instead they are tricked into a ride through the digestive system and eventually are flushed from the body. In addition to bacteria, positive results have been seen with MOS acting as an attachment decoy for viruses and candida species as well.

Saccharomyces boulardii provides a synergistic effect in promoting intestinal defense. It promotes the health of the intestinal tract, helps protect its beneficial microbiota, and enhances immune function. MOS (mannan-oligosaccharide) is an oligosaccharide from the cell walls of S. cerevisiae that can prevent bacteria from adhering to the epithelial cells and reduce their proliferation.

Saccharomyces boulardii + MOS does not require refrigeration and can be stored at room temperature. Refrigeration will, however, ex- tend the shelf life. Avoid temperatures above 77 F (25 C).
