Vitals Pycnogenol® is a patented and standardized pine bark extract (the outer part of the bark) of the maritime pine (Pinus pinaster), which is a pine species that grows at the SW coast of France.
Pines are rich in various polyphenols such as the oligomere proanthocyanidines (OPC) and organic acids (among which ferulic acid, cinnamic acid, and caffeic acid).
Pycnogenol has established quite a reputation in the past 40 years as a novel supplement. By now pycnogenol is one of the best researched nutritional supplements with no less than 300 scientific articles.
The biological effects of pine bark extract are multifaceted and based on various pathways.
Vitals Pycnogenol® is a strong antioxidant which protects cells in the body against free radicals. Pycnogenol also support a healthy immune response, which is important to maintain healthy lungs.
Pycnogenol also supports a healthy blood pressure, good blood circulation and elastic arteries because it positively influences the synthesis of NO (nitrogenoxide) from the amino acid L-arginine in the vessel walls.
NO is involved in many regulatory mechanisms, among which arterial walls.
Pycnogenol assists in maintaining the strength of veins and capillaries and is very useful for people with varicose veins and tired legs.
The active ingredients in the pine bark extract directly influence the activity of the enzyme α-glucosidase, which results in a faster absorption of carbohydrates in the gut. This is how pycnogenol can assist in a balanced glucose metabolism.
Vitals Pycnogenol® assists in the synthesis of collagen and hyaluronic acid, which are important building blocks for cartilage and synovial fluids. Apart from a healthy immune respons, these building blocks are also important for a normal joint function.
Women entering menopause can also benefit from supplementing with pycnogenol , because it also positively affects symptoms such as hot flushes.
When combined with proper nutrition and training, athletes can benefit from using pycnogenol, as it can make them faster and have better endurance capacity too. Furthermore, pycnogenol can improve recovery after heavy training sessions.
The main reason for this beneficial effect is because pycnogenol is an antioxidant. Even though formation of free radicals is a normal process after strenuous exercise, so you might wonder whether that is part of the positive effect of training, pycnogenol never negatively affected training results.
