Silica is the compound form of silicon an important element that stimulates, rebuilds and repairs collagen fibers, the most abundant protein in connective tissue. It’s essential for collagen production and crosslinking, supporting keratin, elastin, bones and cartilage for structural integrity and movement.

Daily intakes of silica range from about 20 mg/day to 50 mg/day in Western countries. Higher intakes (104 mg/day – 204 mg/day), have been reported in China and India, where plant-based foods are the major components of the diet.
Foods with higher amounts of silica do not always provide bioavailable silicon in the body.
Foods with higher silica content (e.g. unrefined grains, fibrous vegetables) typically have lower silica bioavailability due to the silica being bound within complex matrices like lignin, cellulose and phytates, which are poorly digested. A significant portion of silica being in polymerized or insoluble forms that the body cannot absorb.
Mesoporosil ® is a mesoporous structure, meaning it has a high surface area with nanoscale pores. These pores allow for controlled dissolution and targeted release of silicon in the form of orthosilicic acid. The mesoporous design prevents premature polymerization and enables a gradual release profile.

The essential nature of silicon
Silicon is virtually everywhere in nature. Next to oxygen, it is the second most abundant element in the biosphere, comprising 26% of the earth’s crust. Our bodies contain about 1 gram of silicon.
Silicon is an essential element required for the normal growth, development, and integrity of bones, joints and connective tissue. It is also critical for healthy hair, skin, nails, arteries and cartilage. Literally every part of the body that requires strength and elasticity requires silicon.
Specifically, silicon is associated with collagen formation, the fibrous protein matrix which provides support for body structures such as cartilage and bones. This is why, in addition to calcium, magnesium and other trace minerals, silicon plays an important role in optimal bone health. Inadequate silicon intake has also been associated with weak, brittle nails.
Our bodies process silicon inefficiently and this ability diminishes further as we age. This is clearly why OrthoSil supplementation is necessary to ensure healthy bones, joints, hair and nails.
OrthoSil and bones
Silicon plays a very important role in bone calcification, especially during the growth of new bone. The cells that make bone (osteoblasts) start by constructing a connective tissue matrix. When this is done, the osteoblasts switch their function and begin to fill in this matrix with minerals. This process requires silicon.
In a study using a rat model of osteoporosis, supplementation with water-soluble silicon significantly increased femoral and tibial bone density. This study also found that water soluble silicon supplementation led to reduced urinary excretion of calcium and phosphorous, which indicates a decreased amount of bone being broken down. Although this study focused on short-term, high dose silicon, the findings suggest that prolonged, low-dose, water soluble silicon may have the same effect.
OrthoSil and Skin
The skin is the largest organ of the human body, contributing up to 15-20% of our body weight. Skin is composed of a large amount of connective tissues. Bioavailable silicon was shown to increase collagen concentration up to 12.5% in the dermis of the skin of calves. Silicon is crucial for activating the hydroxylation enzymes involved in cross-linking collagen, which improves the strength and elasticity of this fibrous protein. Better collagen means better skin, more elasticity and fewer wrinkles.
