Vitals Lactoferrin-BT contains spray-dried lactoferrin, an important immune-supporting glycoprotein, found in breast milk, tears and saliva.
Lactoferrin-BT from Vitals contains Biotis® Lactoferrin from FrieslandCampina Ingredients. FrieslandCampina is a well-known Dutch dairy cooperative, but far fewer people know that the FrieslandCampina Ingredients division produces specific ingredients from milk for infant nutrition, sports nutrition and health products for adults, and that they are also the global pioneer and expert in the field of lactoferrin. Lactoferrin is naturally part of breast milk and is considered one of the most valuable proteins in milk. The challenge is to extract this vulnerable substance from the freshest possible cow's milk in the most careful way possible. Only then will it retain those optimal properties for which it is known. Lactoferrin-BT from Vitals contains no less than 200 mg of the highest quality lactoferrin, packed in a special stomach acid-resistant capsule to ensure that it arrives intact at its destination.
What is lactoferrin?
Lactoferrin is a protein that is part of the whey proteins in milk and consists of a long chain of up to 700 amino acids. The richest natural source of lactoferrin is breast milk. It also occurs in smaller amounts in other bodily fluids such as saliva and tears. The second richest source is cow's milk, which is therefore usually used as a raw material for the production of lactoferrin for use in nutritional supplements and for addition to infant formula. The name of this protein is derived from the words 'lac' (Latin for milk) and 'ferrum' (Latin for iron). The latter refers to the strong iron-binding capacity of lactoferrin. There are two forms in nature: hololactoferrin and apolactoferrin. Hololactoferrin refers to the form that is (partly) saturated with iron and apolactoferrin contains the lowest possible amount of iron. This is the form that is mainly used in supplements.
Quality
Multiple aspects influence the quality of lactoferrin. By far the most important aspect is the preservation of the spatial structure of the molecule, on which the properties and activity of proteins in general depend. Under certain conditions (such as high temperature or low pH) a process called 'denaturation' can occur in which the spatial structure of the protein molecule is lost and it loses its properties. Protein denaturation is an irreversible process; hence, in the production of lactoferrin it is of utmost importance to handle this valuable substance as gently as possible. It is possible to demonstrate the preservation of the spatial structure through a laboratory analysis and comparative research has shown that not every lactoferrin on the market scores equally well in this respect. Sometimes this is because the lactoferrin is not obtained from fresh milk, but from whey that has already undergone a number of processing steps, during which denaturation may have occurred. Biotis® Lactoferrin in Lactoferrin-BT from Vitals is manufactured from fresh cow's milk according to an extremely refined and mild production process, which guarantees that this valuable protein has retained its natural properties. Because lactoferrin is also sensitive to a low pH, Vitals uses a special capsule for this product that does not dissolve in the acidic environment of the stomach, but only opens in the small intestine.
Another important point is the purity of the lactoferrin. This should be at least 95%. Naturally, lactoferrin should also be as low as possible in contaminants such as heavy metals and dioxins. A specific measure that is often mentioned in the context of the quality of a lactoferrin product is the content of lipopolysaccharides (LPS). LPS are components of the outer membrane of certain bacterial species. However, contrary to what is generally thought, the possible presence of LPS is not specific to lactoferrin products, but LPS occurs in many foods. A number of normally present and harmless bacterial species in our intestine also produce these substances. The LPS content in a lactoferrin supplement should therefore mainly be seen as a measure of the presence of (dead) bacteria. It is an indicator of the freshness of the cow's milk used as a lactoferrin source. The less fresh the milk, the more bacterial growth or dead bacteria will be found in it. The cow's milk used for Lactoferrin-BT from Vitals is processed within 24 hours of arrival at the production location. The production process itself is carried out under strict hygienic conditions and includes several quality checks. In short, Vitals lactoferrin-BT is very pure and has an exceptionally high quality, and a very low presence of contaminants such as LPS. Lactoferrin-BT also contains a maximum of 0.01% lactose (0.02 mg per capsule).
More about FrieslandCampina Ingredients
There is probably not a Dutch person who is not familiar with FrieslandCampina. After all, dairy (for those who can tolerate it well) is still one of the most popular foods in our country. Many people have grown up with it. The unique thing about FrieslandCampina is that it is a so-called cooperative. This means that the dairy farmers themselves own the company. With the great advantage that management is based on a sincere love for dairy and that the proceeds of the products are returned to the farmers. In addition to various types of dairy products, FrieslandCampina (under the company name FrieslandCampina Ingredients) is also big in simple ingredients from milk. After all, cow's milk contains a wide range of important nutrients, including vitamins and minerals, but also proteins such as lactoferrin. FrieslandCampina Ingredients is the part of the company that specializes in the development of and scientific research into high-quality components from milk. This includes close collaboration with renowned scientists from Wageningen University & Research. FrieslandCampina started extracting lactoferrin from cow's milk about 25 years ago, making it the forerunner in this field. Initially to add to infant formula (lactoferrin is also an important component in breast milk), but later also for other applications such as nutritional supplements. At the time, the quality of Biotis® Lactoferrin was the first in the world to receive a positive assessment from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and has become a benchmark for other lactoferrin producers on the market. FrieslandCampina has not been idle in the meantime and has further refined the production process. The recent milestone was the opening of a completely new, state-of-the-art production location in Veghel in Brabant, especially for the production of lactoferrin. Vitals is proud to work with this top producer, so that they can offer you the very highest quality lactoferrin on the market!
