Vitals Elke Dag 50+ Senior is a carefully designed multivitamin specifically for the over-50s. The body's nutritional needs change with age. For example, the need for iron and copper decreases. Therefore, Elke Dag 50+ does not contain iron or copper. What men and women do need at this age is extra vitamin B12 and sufficient folic acid (folate), among other things, to support mental functions such as memory. Higher doses of vitamin K2 and D3 are also important for this age group. The product is formulated based on the latest scientific insights, tailored to current data regarding nutritional status in the Netherlands and the optimal intake amounts for each nutrient. .

Vitamin B12 as methyl- and adenosylcobalamin, folic acid as active folate
What men and women do need at that age is extra vitamin B12 and sufficient folic acid for, among other things, brain function and supporting homocysteine metabolism. It therefore contains 150 mcg of vitamin B12, in the biologically active forms of methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin (also called dibencozide), as well as 400 mcg of folic acid. This multi uses Quatrefolic®* (6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolate bound to glucosamine salt. This is the form of folic acid as it occurs and is used in the body, where binding with glucosamine salt allows this biologically active form to remain stable and ensures optimal absorption.
Biologically active (co-enzymatic) forms
Elke Dag 50+ contains, in addition to these biologically active forms of vitamin B12 and folic acid, also the biologically active forms of vitamins B2 and B6 (which also play a role in homocysteine metabolism), riboflavin-5'-phosphate and pyridoxal-5'-phosphate, respectively. The advantage of these endogenous forms is that they can be used directly by the body and do not need to be converted.
Unique: relatively high dose of choline
Choline has been a standard ingredient in multivitamins for a long time. But almost always in low doses (between 10-30 mg). This is because little was known about it. But more and more is becoming known about it! In 2012, the European Commission approved three health claims for choline, which apply to a dosage of at least 82.5 mg. It is important for normal lipid metabolism, homocysteine metabolism, and normal liver function. In 2016, the RDA was established for the first time in the United States at 550 mg/day, based on clinical research specifically designed to determine daily requirements. In 2016, the EFSA also deemed choline an essential nutrient, but has not yet established an RI. The adequate intake was established at 400 mg/day, based on the average intake in European countries, and not based on the American study, which determined 550 mg/day. The average intake of adults in Europe ranges between 291 and 468 mg/day. Reason enough to include a generous amount of choline in a daily multivitamin!
Elke Dag multivitamins contain choline from the VitaCholine® brand. This brand stands for superior quality and has been extensively researched.
Vitamin K1 and K2
Every Day multivitamins now also contain a small amount of vitamin K1, in addition to a higher dose of vitamin K2. Vitamin K1 is primarily absorbed by the liver and primarily activates clotting factors, while vitamin K2 has greater bioavailability, is distributed more widely throughout the body's tissues, and is therefore more effective at activating other vitamin K-dependent enzymes such as osteocalcin and MGP. These enzymes ensure, among other things, that calcium is properly absorbed and reaches its intended destination: the bones.
The body will always use vitamin K first for its vital blood clotting function. Because vitamin K2 is a much more expensive raw material than vitamin K1, a small amount of K1 is added to multivitamins so that it can be used for the primary blood clotting function, leaving the K2 for other, very important functions. The regularly established RI for vitamin K is based on the amount needed for normal blood clotting. Oddly enough, the optimal dosage of vitamin K for other vitamin K-dependent bodily processes was not considered.
Vitamin K2 Stability
Vitamin K2 appears to be a very sensitive substance. Especially when combined with calcium and/or magnesium, the vitamin content in a tablet or capsule decreases rapidly. Using vitamin K2 in a product with high doses of calcium and/or magnesium is technically a real challenge. Vitals therefore uses a K2 ingredient branded K2VITAL™ DELTA, which is stable even in a formula high in these minerals. A patented micro-encapsulation process is used, protecting the fat-soluble K2 particles with two layers of fiber from interacting with other ingredients. Vitals commissioned an independent laboratory to test the stability of K2VITAL™ DELTA, and it performed best in the test. It was compared to other vitamin K2 brands, specifically in combination with the ingredients used in Vitals products. The conclusions were that protecting the K2 is absolutely essential, that K2 levels remained stable with K2VITAL™ DELTA, and that it was superior to the other K2 ingredients.
Generous vitamin D doses, from plant sources
European government agencies have determined in recent years that the level for adequate dietary vitamin D intake should be higher (15 µg) and that the maximum permitted dose could be increased (100 µg). In the Netherlands, they are still cautious, indicating that 10 µg is sufficient and that the maximum amount is 75 µg. The RI (or RDA) is, strangely enough, still stuck at 5 µg. But in the orthomolecular world, the importance of higher doses has been known for some time. Leading vitamin D experts recommend that the vitamin D level (calcidiol level) of adults should be at least 75 nmol/l. To maintain such vitamin D levels, an oral dose of vitamin D3 is estimated at 25-75 mcg per day. Vitamin D is also important for bone health by promoting calcium absorption from food and calcium uptake in the skeleton. But vitamin D has a much broader range of effects and also has a beneficial effect on, among other things, immunity, muscle function, and normal cell division. Given its importance and many health-promoting properties, one tablet therefore contains a dose of 35 mcg of vitamin D3.
Natural calcium and magnesium from the sea
The multivitamins use calcium and magnesium from the Aquamin® brand, sourced from the sea. This multivitamin achieves much higher dosages than previously used compounds, while the absorption of these ingredients has been proven to be good. The magnesium (Aquamin Magnesium) is obtained from the seawater of the Irish Sea, and studies show that it is well absorbed by the body. In addition to approximately 35% elemental magnesium, the ingredient also contains small amounts of other minerals and trace elements. The calcium (Aquamin Calcium) comes from a red algae called Lithothamnium calcareum. This algae species absorbs and stores minerals and trace elements from the sea. While alive, it has a beautiful red/pink color, but when it dies, it calcifies and turns white or light gray. Only calcified red algae is harvested, from the waters off the coast of Iceland. In addition to 32% calcium, the raw material also contains 3% magnesium and small amounts of other minerals and trace elements. The synergistic effect of the natural trace element profile of this calcium and magnesium may partly explain the improved absorption and the impressive studies conducted on it.
Zinc and manganese as amino acid chelates (bisglycinates)
Amino acid chelates (bisglycinates) were chosen for the minerals zinc and manganese. Each mineral particle is strongly bound (chelated) to two molecules of the amino acid glycine. Minerals in this form easily reach the small intestine and are highly absorbed. They are also gentle on the stomach. Furthermore, Vitals specifically chooses amino acid chelates from Albion Minerals, recognizable by the trademark TRAACS®, which stands for The Real Amino Acid Chelate System. This brand was created to clearly differentiate them from other, potentially inferior, unstable amino acid chelates. Albion has filed over 100 patents worldwide guaranteeing the process, science, and structure of their amino acid chelated minerals.
strong>Silicon and Boron for Strong Bones
Every Day 50+ contains 15 mg of silicon from bamboo and 1 mg of boron. Silicon is involved in bone growth and is a synergist with calcium. Boron improves calcium and magnesium status.
Natural lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin for the eyes
Elke Dag 50+ contains a high dose of lutein and zeaxanthin, which protect the eyes from aging and are important for vision. In addition, vitamin A, vitamin B2, and zinc help maintain sharp vision.
Lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin are natural carotenoids. These substances are found in high concentrations in the body's retina and macula lutea ("yellow spot"). The body cannot produce lutein and zeaxanthin itself; they must be obtained from food. These are found in green leafy vegetables, and red, yellow, and orange fruits and vegetables. Meso-zeaxanthin is only found in very limited quantities in food (shrimp, salmon skin, trout skin and meat). It is primarily produced in the retina by converting lutein through an enzymatic reaction. It can, however, be effectively supplemented. Meso-zeaxanthin has only recently become known to be a very effective supplement, and is preferred over supplements of lutein and zeaxanthin alone.
Special additions
Finally, the special substances Q10, alpha-lipoic acid, pterostilbene, and PQQ have been added.
Coenzyme Q10, PQQ, and alpha-lipoic acid are two very important molecules that play a role and are located in the mitochondria of every cell in the body; the energy factories where sugars are burned and converted into the energy the human body needs. They also have strong antioxidant properties and help protect the body from free radical damage. Elke Dag 50+ contains a basic dose of both substances.
Pterostilbene, the more easily absorbed form of resveratrol
Finally, Elke Dag 50+ contains a relevant dose of pure pterostilbene (pTeroPure®), which occurs naturally in blueberries. Pterostilbene is also called the new generation of resveratrol due to its improved bioavailability. Like resveratrol from grapes, pterostilbene belongs to the group of phytoalexins: plant defense compounds that protect a plant against fungi and bacteria, among other things. As an antioxidant, pterostilbene helps protect the human body at the cellular level against oxidative stress and the signs of aging. It also has a beneficial effect on blood pressure and blood circulation.
