There is currently a lot of interest in science for various forms of vitamin B3, such as nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) and nicotinamide riboside (NR). NMN has even made it into the media. It is often overlooked that nicotinamide, like NMN and NR, also plays a key role in the production of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD). NAD is a crucial intermediate in our energy metabolism.
Nicotinamide is a much more common form of vitamin B3 and therefore a lot more affordable than NR. In addition, nicotinamide has been officially approved as a food supplement based on a long history of safe use, unlike NMN. Our energy metabolism: an ingenious system of chemical reactions
Who couldn't use a little extra energy every now and then? You can largely create mental energy yourself by doing things that make you happy. However, our body needs food every day as fuel and a source of energy to function optimally. Our cells contain mitochondria, small fuel factories. Here, nutrients such as sugars and fatty acids are converted into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the universal fuel in the human body, by means of a reaction with oxygen.
Our energy metabolism is a very ingenious but complex whole of all kinds of chemical reactions. Various substances (including coenzymes and enzymes) play a role in this. Some of these substances are produced by the body itself. Other substances must be ingested through food, such as vitamin B3.
Vitamin B3 assists enzymes in energy production
Vitamin B3 is the name for a group of various related compounds, such as nicotinamide (also known as niacinamide), nicotinic acid (also called niacin) and nicotinamide riboside (abbreviated NR). Vitamin B3 is a precursor substance of one of the most important coenzymes in our body, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD). A coenzyme assists an enzyme to ensure that a certain chemical reaction proceeds properly. In the case of NAD, it mainly concerns reactions that are related to the release of energy from fats, carbohydrates and proteins.
Crucial role for NAD
Here we go a little deeper to describe the crucial role of NAD. NAD is very special because it occurs in all living beings. Electrons that come from the conversion of nutrients are captured by NAD (together with hydrogen ions). This forms the electron-rich NADH (the H in NADH stands for hydrogen). These electrons are then transported by NADH to the place where they are released. After a subsequent chain of reactions, the universal fuel ATP is ultimately created. With ATP, the body can carry out all the processes that are necessary to continue to function properly.
NAD is partly used up in certain reactions in the body, which is why we need to consume sufficient vitamin B3 every day. Unfortunately, the body's own production of NAD also becomes less efficient as we get older. Vitamin B3 in the form of nicotinamide is converted into NMN in the body, just like NR, from which NAD is then formed (see figure 1).

NDR 760 mg from Vitals contains RiaGev-SR® from the American manufacturer Bioenergy Life Science. 'NDR' stands for Nicotinamide and D-Ribose. The delayed-release tablet (SR = Slow Release) contains vitamin B3 and D-ribose in a patented ratio. D-ribose is a simple sugar (monosaccharide) that can (also) be produced in the body from glucose.
