Documented Strains Matter®
Clinical trials have examined whether probiotics taken orally can influence vaginal floral balance and urinary tract health and, likewise, whether all probiotics have such benefits. The answer to the first issue is that, yes, an intake of probiotics as an oral supplement
can significantly and beneficially affect the balance of vaginal flora.
The answer to the second is that only certain probiotics can provide this benefit. Direct comparisons have demonstrated that the probiotic species and strains must be carefully selected in order to significantly and beneficially influence vaginal health.

Lactobacilli For Vaginal Health
Lactobacilli are essential for keeping the vaginal flora healthy. Under certain circumstances, normal resident lactobacilli may be lost. Because the intestinal tract functions as a reservoir for vaginal probiotic lactobacilli, oral supplementation of lactobacilli helps to maintain proper vaginal flora and promote urinary tract health.
The normal vaginal milieu of adult women has a pH of 3.8 to 4.4, and this environment is maintained by the vaginal microbiota predominantly consisting of
lactobacilli and of transient and commensal anaerobic and aerobic bacteria and species common with skin and intestinal microbiota. The documented
lactobacilli found in Fem-Dophilus® Ultra help acidify the vagina by producing lactic acid, which lowers vaginal pH and H2O2, and together promotes the normal vaginal flora. Diminished lactobacilli, elevated vaginal pH, reduced H2O2, antibiotic use, and a weakened immune systems can cause recurrent microbial imbalance.

In a study in 319 women visiting an adolescent medicine clinic and 2 other clinics, most women’s normal vaginal bacterial residents included
Lactobacillus (L.) crispatus (32%), followed by L. jensenii (23%), L. 1086V (15%), L. gasseri (5%), L. fermentum (0.3%), L. oris(0.3%),
L. reuteri (0.3%), L. ruminis (0.3%), and L. vaginalis (0.3%).
Colonization by L. crispatus or L. jensenii was associated with a lower frequency of vaginal complaints (P < .001) in US American women.
L. crispatus was also the predominant vaginal lactobacillus, followed by L. gasseri , in 49 healthy Japanese mothers and 64 pregnant women who visited a prenatal clinic in Gifu.
In 132 pregnant women at 35-37 weeks of gestation attending Ghent University Hospital, Belgium, L. crispatus was the most frequently isolated Lactobacillus species from the vagina (40% of the subjects were positive), followed by L. jensenii (32%) and L. gasseri (30%).
Out of 200 Austrian women in the late first trimester of pregnancy without clinical signs of vaginal infection, 126 women were found to have a normal vaginal microbiota based on Gram stain. In these women the most frequently occurring species were Lactobacillus crispatus and Lactobacillus gasseri, followed by Lactobacillus jensenii and Lactobacillus rhamnosus.

Thus there is epidemiological evidence that dominance of L. crispatus, L. jensenii, L. gasseri and L. rhamnosus is characteristic of the vaginal microbiota of healthy women.
The vaginal flora lactobacilli are referred to as the Döderlein bacilli, which is the category of the Astarte® strains in Fem-Dophilus® Ultra. The Döderlein bacilli are well known to maintain the acidic vaginal milieu to produce H2O2. The lactobacillus strains in Astarte® were isolated from healthy pregnant women in late first trimester of pregnancy.
This combination of lactobacillus strains has been tested in a double-blind randomized trial in 60 subjects. Oral supplementation with these strains resulted in improvement of vaginal lactobacilli microbiota. Similar positive results have been found in other trials.
