AOR Vinpo-15 contains 15mg vinpocetine, the smart drug for improved memory recall, is a pscyhostimulant and nootropic. Vinpocetine supports cerebral blood flow and brain metabolism by increasing cerebral synthesis of ATP, the universal “currency” of energy.
- supports optimal brain and neurological function
- a modified extract from the seeds of an African berry tree, Vinca minor
- delivers a clinically effective dose of vinpocetine
- used as smart drug by world class chess players
Like the well-known botanical, Ginkgo biloba, vinpocetine supports blood flow, oxygen and nutrient delivery to the brain; unlike ginkgo, it does so without reducing blood flow elsewhere in the body. In addition, vinpocetine’s blood thinning effects are far less potent than those of ginkgo, making it a better compound choice for some.
Vinpocetine has been studied in memory and brain function with age, stroke, eye health and tinnitus.
benefits
Improves cognitive and neurological function
Research shows that targeted nutritional supplements such as vinpocetine delay cognitive decline. Studies in red blood cells and damaged neurons show that vinpocetine directly increases ATP levels in these cells, supporting optimal brain energy levels.
Supports visual health and hearing
One study showed that vinpocetine helped reduce tinnitus and hearing loss after exposure to loud noises, and research suggests that it may also enhance circulation in the eyes.
Promotes healthy blood flow to the brain
Like the well-known botanical, ginkgo biloba, vinpocetine supports blood flow, oxygen and nutrient delivery to the brain. Unlike ginkgo, it does so without reducing blood flow elsewhere in the body.
AOR Advantage
Vinpo-15 is an excellent alternative for those who want the health benefits of Ginkgo biloba, but who are concerned about its blood thinning effects. Vinpo-15 is a good choice for those looking to support their cognition and brain function with age.
background reading
Of special interest, not only to the elderly but also to students, is that vinpocetine increases neurotransmitter concentrations critical for learning/memory formation, recall, focus and mood. Vinpocetine selectively improves blood flow in arteries and capillaries in the head and neck areas. Blood flow, glucose availability and oxygen utilization are also improved in the eyes and the structures important for hearing.
Age-related mental decline
With advancing age, numerous factors may lead to declines in memory and cognition. The brain needs energy and oxygen, and must eliminate waste products. The decline in memory and mental acuity associated with aging reflects multiple factors.
- basic building blocks for neurotransmitters are less available and less efficiently used
- hormonal elements decline drastically by the sixth decade of life
- deterioration of the vascular system affects blood supply to the brain
- production of ATP diminishes over time
- ability of blood to carry and release oxygen is subject to decline
- metabolism of glucose for energy goes down
Mental decline and degenerative brain disorders generally involve these six areas. Reduced synthesis of neurotransmitters, decreased circulation and diminished cellular efficiency are the enemies of sound memory and mental clarity.
Neurotransmitters and memory
Vinpocetine influences many areas of brain chemistry and brain functioning. Its impact is greatest upon noradrenaline, principally active in the locus coeruleus (LC) area of the brain. Other primary neurotransmitters are dopamine, acetylcholine and serotonin. Dopamine is involved in reward-seeking behavior and memory associated with spatial tasks.
Acetylcholine is most responsible for memory. Serotonin, which regulates mood and sleep, helps control anxiety and depression.
Locus coeruleus neurons decline in number with age, which strongly influences cognition and information processing. Animal studies have demonstrated that vinpocetine improves the rate of LC neuron firing. Vinpocetine contributes to memory by supporting cognition and awareness.
Memory, however, depends upon many factors. Improved cerebral blood flow is a benefit that compounds such as vinpocetine and ginkgo biloba contribute to.
Vinpocetine shows four main pharmacological and biochemical actions:
(1) selective enhancement of brain circulation and oxygen utilization,
(2) increased tolerance toward inadequate oxygen and reduced blood flow,
(3) inhibition of phosphodiesterase (PDE) enzyme, and
(4) improvement in blood flow and reduction in platelet aggregation as a result of effects on PDE.
These mechanisms suggest numerous possible benefits. In a double-blind placebo-controlled study, 20 mg vinpocetine was given twice per day to subjects with long-term reduced circulation to the brain. After 45 days, subjects had greater mental alertness, reduced confusion, enhanced recall of recent events, diminished anxiety, decreased fatigue, and greater emotional stability
Not just for the elderly
Over 100 clinical trials performed with vinpocetine have involved mostly elderly subjects and focused on memory. However, several studies using younger, healthier volunteers have demonstrated enhanced short-term memory. Thus, vinpocetine may benefit students, who need to memorize large amounts of information in short periods of time.
Other possible uses
Reduced circulation, increased blood viscosity and membrane rigidity in red blood cells can lead to blood flow problems in the inner ear, which could affect hearing and balance.
Similarly, blood flow plays a role in eye health. Platelet “clumping” can impair blood supply through the microvessels that serve the retina, affecting macular health and eye pressure. Supplementation with vinpocetine supports proper circulation to maintain tissue health and integrity.
Through its effects on PDE, vinpocetine might also help people with urinary incontinence. In a small trial among 19 patients, 58% reported improvements in clinical symptoms or bladder function tests. Vinpocetine has been recommended in several recent reviews for controlling female urinary incontinence.
