Jarro-Dophilus 50 Billion
Growing awareness of the relationship between beneficial bacteria and human health has caused interest in probiotics to propagate exponentially. Jarrow Formulas ® has supported probiotic research and innovation for over three decades.
Jarro-Dophilus EPS® Ultra Potency 50 Billion has been designed to respond to consumer demands for an even higher potency version of the year-after-year, best-selling Jarro-Dophilus EPS.
New Science, Old Wisdom
In recent years, tools that were developed as part of the Human Genome Project (such as shotgun sequencing) have been applied to unlocking the microbial puzzle of the human gastrointestinal tract. Sorting out this huge amount of information and its implications has been the undertaking of the Human Microbiome Project.
But a few interesting observations have already surfaced, thus influencing new research and reinforcing old advice. For example, evidence suggests that people with common digestive disturbances often have diminished microbial diversity. Much like a forest or farm ecosystem, our intestinal health appears to be strengthened from variety. Jarrow Formulas has been touting the practical wisdom of consuming multi-strain probiotics, such as the eight strains found in Jarro-Dophilus, for decades. In fact, we introduced the concept to health food stores in 1986!
It’s The Strains
All bacteria are not created equal. Even different strains within the same species can have disparate effects. This is similar to how two breeds of dogs, such as a chihuahua and a pit bull, can be members of the same species yet be very different. And this is why Jarrow Formulas does two things. First, we select strains to create complementary probiotic action. Even more importantly, we label all of our probiotic organisms with their strain designation because we utilize clinically-documented strains from the world’s best probiotic suppliers. Such transparency is your assurance of quality.
Enhanced Potency: 50 Billion Organisms Per Cap
At the time of consumption, Jarro-Dophilus EPS Ultra Potency supplies 50 billion viable organisms per capsule (when kept according to recommended storage conditions through the “Best Used Before” date). With refrigeration, although it is not required, Jarro-Dophilus EPS 50 Billion will exceed this end of shelf-life minimum. With Jarrow Formulas probiotics, you can rest assured that the number on the front of the box is not merely the amount that went into the capsule at the factory. The combination of strain selection, manufacturing and packaging technology ensures the overall stability of Jarro-Dophilus EPS 50 Billion.
Life Or Death: EnteroGuard® Coating
The acidic environment of the stomach has dual functionality. The low pH environment accelerates the digestion of food while also acting as a protective barrier from harmful bacteria. Unfortunately, this presents a challenge to beneficial bacteria. Depending on the organism, upwards of 95% can die off during transit through the stomach when acid levels are at their highest. But with the food-based EnteroGuard® coating, nearly 100% of the 25 billion CFU are ushered to the intestines unharmed.
Jarro-Dophilus EPS® Ultra Potency 50 Billion is room temperature stable and does not require refrigeration. Refrigeration will, however, extend shelf- life. Not just any strains, those found in EPS have been clinically- documented to improve the properties of the intestinal microflora, promote intestinal health, and support immune response.

What's the relation between histamine and gluten intolerance?A short while ago, I was alerted to research that is being conducted on histamine intolerance. The reason it piqued my interest was the remark on how perceived gluten intolerance may in reality be a case of histamine intolerance. The researchers that were interviewed spoke about probiotics being developed to 'cure' histamine intolerance.
Therefore, without further ado, an explanation on what histamine intolerance really is.
What is histamine?Histamine is an extremely important bioactive chemical that is indispensable in the efficient functioning of many body systems. It is a neurotransmitter and is involved in the regulation of stomach acid, the permeability of blood vessels, muscle contraction, and brain function.
In humans, the highest histamine concentrations are found in the skin, lung, and stomach, with smaller amounts in the brain and heart.
Histamine is also essential in defending the body against invasion by potentially disease-causing agents such as bacteria, viruses and other foreign bodies.
Histamine is made and stored within white blood cells such as mast cells.
When the immune system is activated in response to foreign material entering the body, histamine is the first "defense chemical", or more correctly, inflammatory mediator released in the process called inflammation. Inflammation is the clinical evidence that the immune system is responding to a potential threat to the body. Histamine is always present when inflammation occurs, and excess histamine will result in symptoms that resemble inflammation.
In addition to its role in controlling vital body processes and defending against foreign invaders, histamine is a key mediator in the symptoms of an allergic reaction. Since allergy is essentially an inflammatory reaction, histamine, together with other protective inflammatory mediators is released in response to the allergen.
Allergens are components of living cells that in themselves are harmless, such as plant pollens, animal dander, mould spores, dust particles, dust mites, and foods. An allergic reaction to these "foreign but harmless" substances occurs when the immune system mistakes these innocuous materials for a potential threat.

By this time of year, it has become warm enough to spend more time in our gardens. We don't just spend time gardening, but will want to dine here, too. And possibly prepare food on the BBQ or at least prepare a food buffet on holidays such as Kings Day. Unfortunately, a festive meal especially during warm weather is almost automatically associated with stomach bugs.
For elderly persons, the cause of food poisoning is mostly different. They have frequently been raised in a time of food scarcity and are less prone to discard food that is past its expiration date. Or as happening during the current lockdown, they will want to go grocery shopping as little as possible, so they may be eating food that would have been discarded otherwise. However, at their age, they will become sick more easily due to reduced immunity than a young person who has less qualms about throwing out spoiled food.
Foodborne illness, more commonly referred to as food poisoning, is the result of eating contaminated, spoiled, or toxic food. The most common symptoms of food poisoning include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Although it’s quite uncomfortable, food poisoning isn’t unusual. According to reliable data 1 in 6 persons will contract some form of food poisoning every year.
Food poisoning symptoms
If you have food poisoning, chances are it won’t go undetected. Symptoms can vary depending on the source of the infection. The length of time it takes for symptoms to appear also depends on the source of the infection, but it can range from as little as 1 hour to as long as 28 days. Common cases of food poisoning will typically include at least three of the following symptoms:
How to prevent getting sick from the flu
You can prevent germs from making you ill in two ways: prevent entry into the body by careful hygiene, and if they do get in, make sure your body’s natural immune system is able to fight these germs, so they self-destruct before overwhelming the system.
Most flu germs are spread in two ways:
- touching such as hand-to-hand contact
- droplet spread when germs ride along on tiny water droplets that are sneezed or coughed into the air
Try these flu prevention tips to avoid person-to-person spread:
- avoid shaking hands, but bow or give a head nod
- avoid nose-picking as the nose is a breeding ground for germs
- sneeze into a disposable handkerchief and if you don't have one available, sneeze inside your elbow
- shun coughers and sneezers as much as possible.
- avoid crowded rooms
