Jarrow Formulas GPLC Glycocarn or Esterified Carnitine is a specific form of carnitine with a higher affinity for skeletal muscle and the heart than the brain. More specifically, this type carnitine helps to remove toxins from the mitochondria and helps to recycle lactic acid for energy. Great product to increase cardiovascular output.
who can benefit from GPLC
Important to those who seek to promote a healthy heart and blood vessels, especially when taken with a CoQ10 supplement like Q-absorb or QH-absorb. It is also useful for those who seek enhanced blood flow and other exercise benefits.
how does GPLC function?
Evidence suggests that this form of propionyl-L-carnitine is more efficient at getting L-carnitine into the Krebs cycle for energy production in muscles, especially the heart. It also acts to increase arterial blood flow, possibly by increasing nitric oxide production that allows blood vessels to relax and dilate
• bolsters blood flow to active tissue
• promotes heart health, especially in conjunction with Q10
• greatly enhances cardiovascular output
• increases anaerobic muscle power
• helps to burn fat for energy
• great for endurance and bodybuilders athletes
• 100% USP Grade GlycoCarn GPLC

GPLC starts with L-carnitine
The benefits of GPLC start with L-carnitine. In the body L-carnitine works with the enzyme carnitine transferase to shuttle fatty acids into the mitochondria and removes waste afterwards. Fats are the preferred source of fuel for muscles, including heart muscle. In this way, GPLC supports energy production in heart muscle. L-carnitine has also been shown to be useful for improving arterial blood flow.
GPLC: what is Propionyl-L-carnitine?
The effects of GPLC extend beyond that of mere L-carnitine. In fact, propionyl-L-carnitine (PLC), a patented propionyl ester of L-carnitine, has undergone many clinical studies. PLC has been documented to increase the oxidation of both glucose and lactate, increase exercise capacity and increase both mental and overall energy. PLC also appears to improve muscle glycogen stores while increasing the time to muscular fatigue. And PLC used in conjunction with CoQ10 seems particularly beneficial for heart health.
Compared with at least one other form of L-carnitine, PLC appears to produce greater increases in cellular L-carnitine concentrations. Researchers believe that PLC is transported more easily into muscle tissues and supports energy production, perhaps because it increases the flow of pyruvate into the Krebs cycle.
The Krebs cycle is a major component in the body’s energy pathways.
Various intermediate products of the Krebs cycle have special roles in physiology and energy production. Supplemental L-carnitine taps into this pathway and is associated with significantly higher concentrations of pyruvate, ATP and creatine phosphate (crucial components in energy production) in portions of the heart muscle during conditions of extreme stress.
GPLC and glycine
GPLC works identically to propionyl-L-carnitine alone, but GPLC also includes the amino acid glycine. Glycine may improve the uptake of L-carnitine from the intestine. GPLC has been recently investigated in sports nutrition for its effects on nitric oxide production.
Nitric Oxide: a key to GPLC
Nitric Oxide (NO) is a messenger utilized by the body to signal the smooth muscle surrounding blood vessels to relax, allowing the vessels to widen and causing increased blood flow. Exercise enthusiasts make attempts to bolster NO effects like improved blood-flow, increased muscle endurance and more effi cient post- workout recovery by supplementing with biochemical precursors of NO, like L-arginine.
GPLC research suggests that its effects on NO production in the body may be how it mediates its cardiovascular and sports nutrition effects. Recent studies conducted by Dr. Bloomer at the University of Memphis have found that a daily oral dosage of 4.5 grams of GPLC increases blood levels of NOx. NOx is a measure of nitric oxide metabolites in the blood.
In one double-blind study, men and women who were not previously exercise-trained were randomly assigned to take either placebo or GPLC in conjunction with aerobic exercise for eight weeks. The group administered 4.5 grams/day of GPLC had a statistically signifi cant increase in blood-levels of NOx. This study gives evidence to support a GPLC induced increase in resting NO levels.
In a second double-blind study, the effects of 4.5 grams/day GPLC versus placebo were evaluated in resistance trained men. After 4 weeks of placebo or GPLC use, blood levels of NOx were measured following forearm exercise. The GPLC group showed significant increases in NOx levels at three and ten minutes post protocol. This study may indicate enhanced blood flow due to a GPLC induced increase in active NO levels.
Jarrow Formulas’ GPLC uses 100% GlycoCarn GPLC that has been extensively tested for purity and safety. GPLC confers all the benefi ts of propionyl-L-carnitine for heart health in addition to the clinically- documented sports nutrition effects specifi c to GPLC. When it comes to cardiovascular health and sports nutrition, supplementing with Jarrow Formulas GPLC is something one should take to heart.
Keto diets for endurance athletesMany of us will have heard of the advantages of very low carb diets for obese patients and more specifically for diabetics. Going very low carb results in not having as much hunger and much healthier blood glucose levels. Another group that often goes on a keto diet are those who want to prevent tumour growth.
Strength & enduranceIt is not too hard to improve endurance: just put in enough hours doing your favourite endurance sports. Achieving a decent endurance level while maintaining strength is not so easy.
Why? Because the energy needed for both is from competing systems.
