What are electrolytes ?
Electrolytes are minerals in ionic form (not bound to other elements but isolated and electronically charged). Table salt (sodium chloride) dissolves in water and separates into separate ions Na+ (positively charged sodium) and Cl- (negatively charged chloride). This is how minerals come into ou bodies when dissoved  in water and used for many different processes, such as neural impulses and muscle contractions.
Examples of natural electrolytes are sodium, potassium, magnesium and chloride. When you sweat a lot, you will lose a lot of these electrolytes too.

Electrolytes for athletes
People that practice sports often and intensely (for instance endurance athletes like cyclists, runners but also rowers, tennis players and those playing team sports) benefit from adding electrolytes. This is possible in various ways. Contrary to a lot of sports drinks (which contain a lot of sugar, but few electrolytes), Elete sportdruppels offer a natural and healthy addition. No additives, sugars, sweeteners or calories.

Because it is entirely natural and delivers extra magnesium EleteTMSport drops are utmost suited for (top)athletes that need to replenish lost electrolytes (sodium, potassium and magnesium) after exercise.

Great Salt Lake, the source of Elete Sportdruppels
Elete Sportdruppels gets its ultimate strength from the mineral-rich water in the Great Salt Lake of Utah (VS). This is a land-sea, which because of geothermic activities and evaporation, contains enormous amounts of concentrated minerals , which are also found in the ocean, but due to lack of contamination is far purer. Elete sport drops contain a balanced amount of ionic minerals.

Remarkably high magnesium levels
Elete Sportdruppels contain a high amount of magnesium compared to other sport drinks that contain no or barely any magnesium. Magnesium is necessary for muscle contraction, stimulates energy conversion and improves the electrolyte balance. Magnesium also improves focus. Elete Sportdruppels also contain a decent amount of sodium, potassium and chloride.

Tested for doping
Elete Sportdruppels are certified doping-free and have the NZVT certificate to prove it.

Shilajit, an ayurvedic healing organo-mineral: properties and health benefits

For the longest time we've sold ayurvedic medicinal supplements, that invariably were herbs. One of those ayurvedic supplements however is not a herb but a complex organo-mineral substance, that is so peculiar it deserved its own blog article.

What is Shilajit

Shilajit is a complex organo-mineral substance that can be found exuding from rock fissures in the mountains of Asia. Most often found in the Himalayan foothills at altitudes between 1000-5000 meters, it is procured from humus and plant residues. Residues deposited over rocks and get pressed between layers of rocks for millions of years. Later on they get converted into gummy material which can be black, white or brown in color and similar to asphalt in appearance.

Shilajit is a substance revered in Ayurvedic medicine for its wealth of health- promoting properties. Consider the word “shilajit” itself--a Sanskrit term that has been variously translated as “rock-invincible,” “winner of rock,” or “conqueror of mountains and destroyer of weakness.
In Ayurveda, it is counted as strongest and rejuvenating compound on earth while Indian Yogis designate as Amrita or the Elixir Of Life.

Modern scientists also started to explore the therapeutic benefits of Shilajit. Shilajit contains the various minerals and nutrients like fulvic acid and humic acid. Hence Shilajit is truly a super food.

Snacking late at night: a habit you should embrace rather than be embarrassed about!

One of the most persistent food myths that are still lingering around and is almost universally believed, is how eating late at night is bad for you: you will gain fat, sleep poorly and suffer from gastric distress.
Since the early 2000s I grew accustomed to eating a late night meal of dairy protein before going to bed because it helped me to fall asleep more easily, especially after strenuous exercise in daytime.
My partner would not eat that very same meal  before regular bedtime, but eat it after waking up after his first sleep cycle at around 3-4am.
While both of us used to stick to quark in the past due to its higher protein content , we now prefer yoghurt because of the live probiotics in it, and may add extra protein powder to raise its protein content when we aren't eating skyr yoghurt.
Since starting on this habit I've been annoyed by hearing this perpetual nonsense and would love to put this myth at rest.
Whether or not eating late at night is good for you or not depends on the quantity and quality of the food you eat eating throughout the day.
Most people who do snack at night, don't make healthy choices, and go for that tub of ice cream, that bar of chocolate or bag of crisps, which is why eating late at night got such a bad reputation.
However, time doesn’t really matter.

Optimal care for elderly cats

While we don't have children, we are the proud parents of two cats. Both were adopted from their owners for a different reason with well over ten years between each adoption.
Our oldest cat has reached the respectable age of 18 years, which makes her a truly old cat, which comes with many health problems of its own. By now we are more like the grand children who are taking care of their very old (great-)grand parent.
It subsequently blows your mind to see how senior cats are put on an even lower protein diet than they already receive. While felines are full-on carnivores, most will received a mixed diet with an unhealthy amount of carbohydrates. If you're lucky the grains are replaced by legumes, which however does not considerably lower the amount of carbs. Never mind on the precious few choices for cats with urinary or kidney problems.

We thought to put together some tips for owners of (future) senior cats, so you know in advance where to pay attention to.

If you have a feline in the family who’s getting up in years, the good news is that many cats today are living into their late teens and early 20s. With the proper care, a cat in good health at 8 can easily live another 10 or 12 years, or even longer. Now is the perfect time to begin taking steps to ensure not only that your cat stays happy and healthy throughout her golden years, but that she also enjoys an excellent quality of life.
