Vitals Ester-C is considered as the third generation vitamin C behind ascorbic acid and the mineral ascorbates. As soon as vitamin C is absorbed in the body, it is metabolised into metabolites, of which the most important one is threonic acid. These metabolites improve upon the absorption and use of vitamin C in the body. Furthermore threonic acid is capable of mobilising previously absorbed vitamin C and make them available for metabolic processes.

Ester-C consists of a complex of calcium ascorbate with calcium-bound natural metabolites of vitamin C. Ester-C is absorbed considerably faster than regular ascorbic acid, which results in a higher circulating vitamin C-level in the blood, with less excretion of oxalate in the urine and longer retention by the body without gastric discomfort or dental decay. The bioflavonoids in Ester-are synergists of vitamin C; they improve the absorption of vitamn C, prevent oxidation of vitamin C and assist vitamin C with strengthening the capillaries and blood vessels.

A human being is not able to synthesize vitamin C and is fully dependent on nutrition to gt the required daily dose. Vitamin C is water-soluble and is present in the entire body with the highest levels in the adrenals and pituitary gland. However, the highest total amount of vitamin C is found in the liver and skeletal muscles, because these comprise the largest volume in comparison to the rest of the body.

Vitamin C is an essential for the synthesis of collagen and other collagenous molecules. This is why vitamin C can assist in keeping arteries healthy and flexible. All tissues that give our body structure and strenght like the joints, tendons, skin, muscles (as well as the heart muscle), bones and collagen are dependent on the synthesizing capacity of vitamin C, especially during recovery periods (e.g. sleep).
Furthermore vitamin C is an important co-factor for the synthesis of neurotransmitters, steroid hormones, carnitine, the metabolization of cholesterol into bile acids, as well as for the deconstruction of tyrosine and the mineral metabolism.

Vitamin C is a co-enzyme for many other enzymes in biological processes. The antioxidant function of vitamin C is necessary for the maintenance of healthy cells and tissues. Vitamin C has a positive influence on the cardiovascular function.
Vitamin C also helps eliminates heavy metals like mercury, lead, cadmium and nickel. Inside the digestive tract, vitamin C prevents the metabolisation of nitrate and nitrites into nitrosamines.
Vitamin C also plays an important role in the synthesis of prostaglandines and as such supports the immune system.
Based on the countless functions of vitamin C, the uses of a supplement are also wide-spread.

Because of a recent case in the Netherlands about excessive lead exposure in a school for young children, we were asked how to avoid lead poisoning. Hence why we present you this blog article.

How to avoid lead poisoning

Although exposure to lead has decreased within the last two decades, it is still a concern and caution is advised, especially for children who have access to toys with lead-based paint or individuals who live in older homes. In some instances, lead can leach from the main water pipes and into the household water supply. If exposed to lead, eating a healthy diet can help reduce its absorption by the body.

When lead is consumed, research shows it can cause learning and behavior problems; as it accumulates, it can cause lasting problems with growth and development. Infants and children are at a higher risk because they absorb lead more quickly than adults, in addition to being more likely to put non-food items that might contain lead in their mouth.

How to prevent getting sick from the flu

You can prevent germs from making you ill in two ways: prevent entry into the body by careful hygiene, and if they do get in, make sure your body’s natural immune system is able to fight these germs, so they self-destruct before overwhelming the system.

Most flu germs are spread in two ways:

  • touching such as hand-to-hand contact
  • droplet spread when germs ride along on tiny water droplets that are sneezed or coughed into the air

Try these flu prevention tips to avoid person-to-person spread:
  • avoid shaking hands, but bow or give a head nod
  • avoid nose-picking as the nose is a breeding ground for germs
  • sneeze into a disposable handkerchief and if you don't have one available, sneeze inside your elbow
  • shun coughers and sneezers as much as possible.
  • avoid crowded rooms

PFAS pollutants causing turmoil

In October, nearly every construction project came to a grinding halt in the Netherlands, because not a single project except the smallest ones can be completed without excessive paper work or laboratory tests.

Why? The current legal threshold for PFAS, an abbreviation for perfluorinated alkylated substances has been set extremely low until the government is able to define a proper health limit for contaminated soil so as to prevent contamination of clean soil with more heavily contaminated soil.

If cemeteries hadn't been exempt from the rule, not a single dead body could have been interred, since PFAS-chemicals , also known as 'forever chemicals' have accumulated in our bodies to an extent that exceeds the legally set threshold, which is currently as low as the lowest possible detection level.

How to prevent or treat varicose veins with natural remedies?

Sometimes it seems like varicose veins come out of nowhere when you’re least expecting it. Most people over the age of 60 have some degree, and usually they’re not a big deal. But they could be, it depends on the general health of your veins.

Valves in your veins are supposed to work harmoniously to move blood in one direction, to the heart!
If your heart is weak, or your valves stop working, or your veins lose collagen and become weakened, then the blood stays in your legs and feet longer than it should. It pools faster if you’re standing for a long time or if you’re sitting for a long time like during a long plane flight. The pressure inside your veins makes them wider and after a while, micro amounts of blood leak out into the surrounding tissue.
Varicose veins form, that is what you see when you look at your legs and see those twisted, distended big blue veins. It causes venous insufficiency. You are not the only one suffering: a large amount of especially elderly people and those who have to stand for a long time in their jobs, have varicose veins. They mostly impact the legs and feet.

Oral health is a reflection of our overall health

On March 20 we celebrated the International Oral Health Day'. According to the dentist Richard Kohsiek, who's a board member of the Royal Dutch Dental Association, we should think more often about the consequences of oral health as "Oral health is a reflection of our overall health".

What encompasses good oral health?
"In the mouth there are good and bad bacteria. As long as there is a prober balance between good and bad mouth flora, there is not much wrong. Things only go out of control when the bad bacteria outgrow the good bacteria. "

"Plaque is the white part that we see grow on our teeth is formed by a combination of bacteria and food remnants. Becasue these calcify it grows into tartar on locations where the tooth brush can't reach".

Doctor Pauling, why was he so famous? Vitamin C and its role as an anti-aging anti-oxidant

One of the most famous forerunners of high dose vitamin C treatment for disease prevention was Dr. Linus Pauling, a biochemist and peace activist, and a two-time Nobel Laureate.
A large, decade-long study found that men who took 800 mg of vitamin C per day had less heart disease and lived up to six years longer than those following the conventional guideline of 60 mg/day
Vitamin C, when administered intravenously at high doses, has been shown to be selectively cytotoxic against cancer cells.

Vitamin C is one of the most well-established traditional antioxidants we know of, and its potent health benefits have been clearly demonstrated over time, especially for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases.

While most animals have the ability to produce vitamin C internally, three species cannot. Guinea pigs, primates, and humans must obtain their vitamin C from their diet.

Vitamin C has numerous functions in the human body, including acting as an essential cofactor in enzymatic reactions.

In this way, it plays a role in your body's production of collagen, carnitine and catecholamines.

Vitamin C is also used by your body for wound healing, repairing, and maintaining the health of your bones and teeth, and plays a role in helping your body absorb iron.

A powerful antioxidant, vitamin C also helps prevent damage caused by free radicals. Over time, free radical damage may accelerate aging and contribute to the development of heart disease and other health conditions.

It's through this antioxidant effect that it's thought vitamin C may play a role in protecting heart health.

Fluoride, should you avoid it?

A year ago, the Dutch Supreme Court of Justice ruled taxation of fluroided tooth paste should be lowered from the higher tariff meant for luxury gooods such as beauty items to the low tariff that is used for medication and nutritional supplements and meds as fluorided tooth paste can be considered as medicine.
This resulted in quite a big price gap between fluorided tooth paste and non-fluorided tooth paste.
However, since the effectiveness of fluoride has been up to debate it was felt to be an unjust difference by quite a few people who even say fluoride is poisonous. Is fluoride really poisonous? We thought you'd be just as curious about the answer as we are.

Occurence and prevention of gout

Gout is a painful condition considered a complex form of arthritis that is caused when too much uric acid builds up in the body. High levels of uric acid causes the formation of crystals in the joints, creating intense pain and inflammation. The body produces uric acid as it breaks down purines, which are commonly found in meats, seafood, legumes, alcohol, fructose, yeast and some vegetables.

When is drinking alcohol bad for your health?

In the past decade we were told indulging in one or two glasses of alcohol (just one for women) a day is healthy. This was even one of the many recommendations in the national (Dutch) health guidelines. In the past year though, a drastic change occurred: the recommendation changed into zero to perhaps to a most one glass of alcohol a day! So, what gives?
