Jarrow Formulas Bromelain cotanins 1000 gelatin digesting units (GDU) of bromelaïn, the protein digesting enzyme that is naturally found in all parts of the pineapple.
The best known use of bromelain is to aid in the digestion and assimiliation of food, more specifically proteins. It is less well known how bromelain can also be beneficial for wound healing and minor sports injuries.

properties of bromelain
• supports protein digestion
• supports joint health
• suitable for vegans
• derived from pineapple, one tablet contains as much bromelain as an entire pineapple

background reading

Proteolytic enzyme support
Bromelain is a protein-digesting enzyme which is present naturally in pineapple sap and in the pineapple stem. Much smaller amounts
are found in the fruit. Bromelain is classified as a proteolytic enzyme because of its ability to digest proteins. Due to its ability to spare the
body’s own store of proteolytic enzymes, bromelain supplementation may positively affect protein turnover rates in the body; this influence
extends to the proteins found in joint tissues and in the muscles.
Bromelain has a long history of use in folk medicine traditions of the Pacific Rim. This mixture of compounds (bromelain A and B)
extracted from the stem of the pineapple (Ananas comosus) has been used in herbal healing traditions dating back to the 17th century to
address different ailments and complaints.

Digestion and Assimilation
Bromelain, because of its tolerance of both acidic and alkaline conditions, is active in the stomach as well as in the small intestine.
This means that the extract can be taken at the beginning or the end of a meal and yet remain effective as an aid to digesting proteins.
Its robust pH tolerance is also important for bromelain’s use by the elderly. As we age, our ability to secrete hydrochloric acid in the
stomach declines. Therefore, much of the digestive activity that takes place under acidic conditions in younger stomachs begins to
occur under progressively more alkaline conditions as we age.
This impairs protein digestion. Because bromelain is active under both acid and alkaline conditions, it is superbly suited for helping older individuals to digest protein-based foods.

Additional Benefits
Bromelain may promote a healthy inflammation response by stimulating the production of “active peptides” that increase levels of anti-inflammatory prostaglandins (PGs). One problem with modern diets can be large amounts of omega-6 fatty acids, such as those found in corn and many seed oils.
Excess omega-6 fatty acids can increase the body’s production of inflammation-producing compounds which are members of certain classes of prostaglandins and eicosanoids. Bromelain can help to re-establish balance by promoting the production of anti-inflammatory prostaglandins, eicosanoids and related compounds.
Likewise, bromelain has been shown to support cardiovascular health by promoting healthy platelet function and healthy levels of fibrinogen. Finally, scientific evidence indicates that bromelain may support a healthy immune system by the production of specific cytokines and its affect on T-cell activity.

Quality And Potency
The potency of bromelain is measured in gelatin digesting units (GDUs) per gram. When evaluating and purchasing bromelain,
consumers should always look for a GDU rating, per serving.
For example, when there is a “1000 GDU” claim on a label, there may be confusion as to whether this 1000 GDU is provided by a single
500 mg tablet or capsule or, as is often the case, in one gram of raw material. If this reference is 1000 GDU per gram, a 500 mg tablet/
capsule (or up to 700 mg with excipients) contains only 500 GDU of bromelain.
Jarrow Formulas Bromelain products are always accurate to their label claim.

Take 1 to 2 tablets of Jarrow Formulas’ Bromelain 1000, as a dietary
supplement, with food or as directed by your qualified health
consultant. In special cases of enzyme need, Bromelain 1000 may
be taken between meals on an empty stomach except by individuals
with ulcers.

Are white teeth healthy? Advantages and disadvantages of dental veneers

Over the past few weeks, people couldn't stop talking over how a couple of famous Dutch celebrities have undergone dental surgery procedures so they could flash a truly blinding white smile. For this to happen, dental surgeons file away part of the original teeth. Apparently this procedure is becoming ever more popular with the advent of social media like Instagram and YoutTube where these semi-celebs show off their health and wealth.

Yellow teeth are stronger!

Gone are the days we were happy with our natural yellowish teeth. It seems that everyone strives for bright white teeth. There are whitening agents in toothpastes which apparently don’t really do the trick, floss, mouthwash, strips, gels, and even chewing gum. Yellow teeth seem to get a bad reputation and are usually associated with poor oral hygiene. Fortunately, we have some good news for those who lack those pearly whites. Yellow teeth are actually stronger than bright white teeth!

But rest assured, yellow teeth are mostly stronger than white teeth.
The strongest teeth are natural, healthy ones and these teeth are not white. At least, not white like the colour of paper, or even the colour of piano keys. They are a couple of shades darker than that. The enamel itself is a blueish white colour, but it is also somewhat translucent so the yellow of the dentine beneath it shows through to make the overall colour of the teeth either light grey or light yellow.

Healthy bowel function: how does normal poop look like?

One of the major challenges during a heatwave is to drink enough water, so you don't end up dehydrated because the body evaporates so quickly.
One of the more painful results of dehydration is needing to spend much more time in the restroom, sometimes even resulting in a hemorrhage.
Vice versa, we eat more salads and BBQ-foods, both of which are known to cause diarrhea due to improper preparation or preservation.
It is quite obvious that in order to have a pleasant and not too long stay in the restroom, our stools should neither contain too little nor too much water. Most of us will probably have a habit of quickly inspecting their stool, even if it is just the brief moment before flushing it down the toilet. Apart from observing the consistency of your stool, what else can you observe from inspecting your stool?

What are the different types of poop?

Poop, also known as stool or feces, is a normal part of the digestive process. Poop consists of waste products that are being eliminated from the body. It may include undigested food particles, bacteria, salts, and other substances such as improperly absorbed drugs.
Sometimes, poop can vary in its colour, texture, amount, and odor. These differences can be worrying, but usually, these changes are not significant and will resolve in a day or two. Other times, however, changes in poop indicate a more serious condition.

Zinc and HCQ

In the past few months, nearly everyone will have become familiar with the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) and how it has been welcomed as a miracle drug, only to be set aside as being too dangerous to expose sick patients with underlying cardiovascular diseases to it.

Upon learning how HCQ is supposed to be used in this crisis, I was flabbergasted to read how HCQ was put to use by itself, as a drug on its own. True enough, HCQ is a malaria drug, but it was not just meant to be used as a curative medicin on its own for COVID-19 but as a messenger to transport the true miracle mineral, zinc into cells.
The now famous Zelenko protocol which uses HCQ , azithromycin and zinc as well as a number of other essential vitamins and minerals, was never meant to be used in hospital either, but for use by doctors on patients who had just fallen ill.

Now the researchers who discredited HCQ in the Lancet article have been debunked as having used fraudulous data in order to promote a much more expensive drug in which one of the authors had a vested interested, we think it is about time to explain a thing or two on why and how HCQ is used in combination with zinc.

Why celebrating life with food is important for our health

Especially in the darkest months of the year, there seems to be an endless amount of celebrations.
No matter what is always a common theme: food is the main attraction! In fact, the focus society currently places on food has caused us to associate certain foods with holidays, past events and special times. When we sink our teeth into such foods, it can bring back memories we hold close and take us back to a time we enjoyed. Food is much more powerful than we think!

From catching up for coffee, relaxing over brunch, indulging in a long lunch or bonding at a BBQ, it’s hard to imagine getting together without the company of food. Food is something we all have in common, we all must eat, most of us find food pleasurable and trying new foods or cafes is a new experience we can share with others.

Symptoms and natural treatments of indigestion

Indigestion or heartburn can happen when your body has trouble digesting food. Anyone can get it on occasion, or it can be an ongoing problem. Heartburn is especially prominent in December with so many holidays accompanied with delicious foods, that prompt us to overindulge.

While acid reflux is a common phenomenon, not all symptoms of it, are very obvious.
When heartburn happens, for instance due to smoking, alcohol, medication, carbonated drinks or some foods that are difficult to process (spices, fats, acids, fiber) may cause a valve-like stomach muscle to loosen, allowing stomach acid to backwash into the esophagus. This exposes sensitive tissue in the chest to stomach acids, causing painful symptoms.
Common symptoms of reflux are a burning feeling in your chest or stomach, burping, bloating, gurgling stomach, acid reflux, heartburn, nausea or even vomiting.

Problems in your GI tract or other health issues also can cause indigestion. These include:
- acid reflux, gastroesophageal reflux (GER), or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): A reaction to food and drink where contents come back up from your stomach. The acid can come up into your esophagus, the tube-like organ connecting your mouth and stomach. Acid reflux also can produce vomiting. This condition causes heartburn because of the high acid contents.
- irritable bowel syndrome: a disorder that affects your intestines. Symptoms include stomach pain, bloating, gas, constipation, and diarrhea.
- infection: a bacterial infection from Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) can cause indigestion.
- gastroparesis: A condition that affects digestion. If muscles in your GI tract stop working, your body slows down or stops the movement of food. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, bloating, and acid reflux.
- ulcer: A sore on the lining of your stomach (peptic ulcer), small intestine, or esophagus.
- gastritis: Inflammation of your stomach lining.
- stomach cancer: This is a rare condition, but indigestion can be one of its signs.

Which nutritional supplements can you give to your pet?

Just as many pet parents are paying more attention these days to the quality of food they feed their companion animals, they are also realizing the potential benefits of nutritional supplements.

Supplements are becoming more and more recognized as a valuable component of a comprehensive care program for pets.

The primary categories for supplements include joint support, skin and coat health, GI tract health, and liver and kidney support. A less well-known but equally important type of supplement supports healthy circulation, optimal immune function, the healthy presence of oxygen in tissues, and cardiovascular health.

Should I worry about my cholesterol levels?

Recently, new guidelines were introduced for what is deemed to be a healthy cholesterol level. While formerly, it was adviced to introduce cholesterol lowering drugs when your 'bad' cholesterol level amounted to over 2.5 mmol/litre, that number now dropped to 1.8.
This big drop will probably result in a vast increase of people that are being administered cholesterol lowering drugs.

But what if I told you, cholesterol is a poor marker for heart health?

For decades, cholesterol testing has served as that warning for many. An elevated level of "bad" LDL cholesterol has been just the warning people needed to change their ways. It has played that role for several reasons. People like tests because the results seem objective. Reliable measurement of cholesterol is easy and relatively inexpensive. It makes sense biologically. LDL cholesterol, a protein-wrapped package containing fat and cholesterol, tends to slip out of the bloodstream and lodge in blood vessel walls, forming the plaque that leads to clots and heart attacks.

And it makes sense statistically. The correlation between lowering your LDL and lowering your chances of having a heart attack or developing other forms of heart disease is well documented. Indeed, exercise and dietary changes are good for the heart partly because they lower LDL cholesterol levels.

Delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS) is a type of pain that most will experience after doing unusual exercise for the first time.
