Jarrow Formulas B-RIGHT should be used as a dietary supplement to meet requirements in the case of fatigue, deficiency of B-vitamins or in case of a high protein consumption ( > 0.8 g per kg bodymass).

B-RIGHT is a carefully balanced B complex formula

It has been adjusted precisely to the male or female with a vitamin B-deficiency, whether or not this is due to a less healthy lifestyle, prolonged periods of stress, a malfunctioning digestive system or practicing a demanding sport.

Thinking 'more is better' , we have seen mega dosing. However, from scientific literature it has been derived that using adequate doses of better absorbed vitamins works better. This is how B-Right was formulated: a smart B-complex with the right ingredients or materials in just 1 capsule.

B-RIGHT contains choline bitartrate, choline is an important compound for our brains & liver. However, because it smells rather fishy, B-complexes generally don't contain much of it. Jarrow Formulas solved this problem in an elegant way by micro-encapsulating choline in cellulose beadlets.

Methylcobalamine is not just 'a' kind of B12, but it is the best absorbable type of B12, that will help B12-values to healthy levels. Due to the methylation, it is very suitable for a healthy nerve system.

Methyl folate ((6S)-5-methyl tetrahydrofolate or 5-MTHF) is the most biologically active form of folic acid. QUATREFOLIC® is the 4th generation development in folate delivery.

Pantethine is a derivative of Vitamin B5 and is a precursor to Coenzyme A (CoA), which is influential in the cholesterol metabolism in our body. Moreso than ordinary vitamin B5 , which only plays a minor role.

Pyridoxal 5-Phosphate (P-5-P) is a derivate of vitamin B6 and is often not absorbed in adequate amounts by people with a poor digestive system or without enough healthy gut bacteria.
Precisely vitamin B6 is essential for digesting protein for a healthy immune system and building adequate amounts of lean muscle mass by strength athletes.

key benefits
• best balanced vitamin B complex

The water-soluble B vitamins are collectively referred to as “B-Complex.” Each of the B vitamins has their own critical functions in the body, but many people have deficiencies in one or multiple B vitamins without even knowing it. This becomes of particular concern as we age. For instance, it is estimated that vitamin B12 deficiency affects up to 10–15% of the population over 60 years of age, usually due to inadequate dietary intake or impaired absorption. The use of the entire B-Complex is recommended since the individual B vitamins affect one another’s absorption, metabolism, and excretion.

B-complex and energy
Some of the B vitamins are facilitators of the energy-releasing reactions that occur in the mitochondria; others help build new cells to deliver the oxygen and nutrients that permit the energy pathways to run. Exercise stresses metabolic pathways that depend on vitamin B1 (thiamine), vitamin B2 (riboflavin), and vitamin B6 (pyridoxine).
Consequently, the requirements for these vitamins may be increased in athletes and active individuals.
Other research suggests that exercise may increase the requirements for riboflavin and B6, and possibly for vitamin B9 (folic acid) and vitamin B12 (cobalamins). Deficiencies in some of these vitamins have been reported in active individuals, including riboflavin and B6. Thus, active individuals who restrict their energy intake or make poor dietary choices are at greatest risk for poor B vitamin status, and should consider supplementing with B-Complex vitamins.

B-complex and stress
The B-complex vitamins are also intimately involved in the function of the nervous system, and play a role in helping to counter some of the negative effects of stress.
More specifically, thiamine (B1) has been found to reduce the effects of catabolic (i.e., breaking down tissues) stress hormones which result from surgery.
Thiamine also protected the adrenal glands (the “stress glands”) from functional exhaustion.
Vitamin B5 (as calcium D-pantothenate) is intimately involved in adrenal function and the production of adrenal hormones associated with stress.
Vitamin B3 (niacin) has been found to reduce certain neurological damage caused by oxidative stress and to promote heart health in times of emotional/painful stress.
B6 deficiency has been found to be correlated with increased psychological distress in recently bereaved men; and supplementation with B6 is suggested as part of an overall program for managing stress.
Vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to fatigue and degeneration of peripheral nerves.

Other B-vitamin benefits
A substantial body of scientific evidence suggests that generous intakes of folic acid, vitamin B6 and B12 may help improve cardiovascular health.
In addition, folic acid has been shown to play a critical role in protecting against some serious birth defects, including neural tube defects, when taken by women of childbearing age both before and during pregnancy.

Biotin (B7) containing enzymes are involved in gluconeogenesis, fatty acid synthesis, and amino acid metabolism.
In addition, choline, and inositol are compounds which are not technically B vitamins but which have related functions. Choline is a precursor to the neurotransmitter, acetylcholine. It is also a lipotropic factor in lecithin that may help to emulsify fats.
Inositol has mild lipotropic activity, and is sometimes used to help promote a sense of calm.

What is special about B-Right?
Methylcobalamin is used rather than cyanocobalamin, a common form of vitamin B12 often found in B-Complex vitamins. While cyanocobalamin and methylcobalamin show similar absorption profiles following oral administration, significantly more vitamin B12 accumulates in liver tissue with methylcobalamin.
Furthermore, human urinary excretion of methylcobalamin is about one-third that of a similar dose of cyanocobalamin, indicating substantially greater tissue retention.
In addition, B-Right provides pantethine, a derivative of vitamin B5 and a precursor to coenzyme A (CoA). It also contains pyridoxal 5-phosphate, the coenzyme form of vitamin B6. The forms of B vitamins in B-Right have the potential to enter our tissues and get to work immediately, rather than having to be converted first.

B-Right is a carefully balanced B-Complex formula. It is low-odor because the choline bitartrate is microencapsulated in cellulose beadlets. B-Right is the pleasant-to-take B-Complex.

What causes grey hair? Can it be prevented or treated?

One of the results of a lockdown during the current COVID-19 pandemic was that all hair parlours were closed down and those of us, why rely on their hair being dyed by professional hair stylists, were confronted with their grey hair again.
Which made me want to uncover the various reasons why people get grey hair (in my case it was mostly B12-deficiency and stress) and whether grey hair can be prevented and/or treated.

Hair gets its colour from a type of pigment called melanin. The formation of melanin begins in the fetus. Hair gets two types of pigments: the dark pigments are called eumelanin, and light pigments are called pheomelanin. These two types of melanin pigments blend together to form different types of hair colour. Again, these pigments are positioned properly in the hair follicles. So, when hair starts growing, these pigments are absorbed in the hair to give it a particular colour.

Hair colouration is a systematized process. So, if there is a slight difference in the bodily system, the hair loses its colour which is then called as grey hair. Over the decades, the researchers are working hard to find a real solution for grey hair. Unfortunately, there is no specific remedy yet come out that can provide the ultimate solution against grey hair. On the other hand, people must have a clear understanding on why they get grey hair. It will help them to find out the reasons specific to grey hair. Here are some of the causes of grey hair:

Leptin, leptin resistance and SIRT1

After demand for resveratrol and pterostilbene went up considerably, due to a remark on tv by a doctor about its' effect on leptin and cardiovascular function, we got a lot of requests to explain how leptin works.

Currently, a major topic in the field of obesity research is the link between obesity and the hormone leptin. Some evidence suggests that obese-prone individuals don’t respond to increasing leptin levels in the same way that non-obese-prone individuals do, which is the reason obesity is now being associated with possible “leptin resistance.” Scientists first discovered leptin in 1994, after years of research focused on hormones that affect body weight and calorie intake. While initially researchers believed the discovery could be used to create powerful weight loss supplements, this has never happened.

How does leptin function in the body and where does the hormone come from? Leptin interacts with areas of the brain that control hunger and eating behavior. The nickname “the starvation hormone” has been given to leptin because levels tend to plummet when someone restricts their calorie intake too much, exercises more and loses body fat. These are all factors involved in what’s called “starvation mode.”
Meanwhile, ghrelin is called a “hunger hormone” that increases your desire to eat.

At your ideal “set point weight,” fat cells produce a given amount of leptin, which maintains the internal energy balance needed for necessary cellular function and proper weight management. In most healthy adults, changes in body weight will trigger changes in leptin, causing appetite to either increase when body fat falls or decrease when body fat rises — although in some susceptible individuals this energy-balance system seems to malfunction.

There’s still a lot to learn about how leptin resistance or decreased sensitivity to leptin’s signals develops, and what can be done to prevent or reverse it. Many experts believe that eating a highly processed diet — especially while also leading a stressful and mostly sedentary lifestyle — is the perfect storm for developing leptin resistance.

Even if someone is genetically susceptible to weight gain or obesity, there’s still a lot they can do to help prevent this from happening, especially eating a nutrient-dense diet, getting enough exercise and taking steps to manage stress.

Skin hunger: why we crave touch

As we are in the midst of the Easter Holiday, we can't help but feel sad. While Mother Nature is showing abundant signs of spring during a period of incredibly sunny weather, we are barely allowed to go outside other than to do what is absolutely necessary. Our gyms have been closed for almost a month now while in some countries, people aren't even allowed to exercise. Not just group exercise, but also to just jump on a bike and go for long rides.

While couples and families get grumpy from living together in a cramped space, others face different problems: they are living without any companion whatsoever. Therefore it's not a miracle how all of a sudden, pet asylums have been able to 'clear out' their list of unwanted pets. Not just because people have more time at hand to walk a dog (just about the only thing some are allowed to do) but also because they crave the ability to touch a living being, for lack of being able to touch another human.

Somehow, just like the sense of smell is overlooked, this also is true for the sense of touch. Only when we lose it, we crave it. This craving also is called 'touch hunger' or 'skin hunger'.

Exercise and immunity: staying fit at home

When you are used to go to a gym to exercise and are forced to stay at home, it is good to know there are alternatives to gym workouts. Since most of those exercises are shown on short videos with an explanation we will not present much text this time , apart from explaining why exercise is so important for immune system.

Heart disease: what are the differences between men and women?

Past week there was attention for new documentary called "De slag om het vrouwenhart", made by Hella de Jong, in which she relates about her quest for heart health. She suspected health problems, but wasn't sure why. After having been told her problems were psychosomatic, caused by her parents' traumatic WWII experiences, she wasn't satisfied and kept pushing for more research. Finally she got a massive heart attack while perfoming a stress test in the hospital.

This interview sent me on an immediate flashback to 1985, when my mom felt ill enough to visit the hopital after what was probably a minor heart attack. Her complaints weren't taken very seriously, yet they admitted her to hospital, though without being tied to a heart monitor. It was here she died that same day in the presence of my brother. When listening to Hella's story it seems there hasn't changed much in 35 years.

For a very long time, women were not taken into consideration when research was conducted on heart diseasae. Nor were they taken seriously when they went to their doctors with health complaints. Yet, among women, heart disease has also become the leading cause of death.

Determining heart disease risk in women

Women and men share many heart disease risk factors, but recent studies are showing what previous male-focused studies have not shown: Women also have their own unique heart disease risk factors.

Traditional risk factors common to both women and men:

  • obesity
  • smoking
  • diabetes
  • high blood pressure
  • family history
  • metabolic syndrome – the co-existence of high blood pressure, obesity, and high glucose and triglyceride levels
  • high levels of C-reactive protein – a sign of inflammatory disease that can occur along with other cardiovascular risk factors

Some risk factors that relate specifically to women or that can affect women disproportionately include:

  • relatively high testosterone levels prior to menopause
  • increasing hypertension during menopause
  • autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis – more common in women than in men
  • stress and depression are more common among women
  • low risk factor awareness: lack of recognition of many of the above conditions as risk factors for heart disease is a risk factor in itself

Why does stress make us sick more easily?

Most diseases that we are dealing with nowadays are chronic diseases as a result of poor lifestyle choices that will only affect us later in life. However, we can get sick much sooner when exposed to chronic stress. How can this happen?

Stress is defined as a series of events, starting with a stimulus leading to a stress response known as the 'fight-or-flight' reaction that can affect many body systems.
Physical or physiological stress is mostly short-lived, while psychological or emotional stress can last for a very long time.

Why are multivitamins important for your health?

Sometimes, when your only source of news is from mainstream media, it seems as if taking nutritional supplements is worse than taking medicines. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Especially multivitamins and fish oil can be your cheapest way to top health in addition to a healthy diet. People following healthy diets, are as rare as diamonds and it most certainly doesn't mean following the latest fad diet where you must buy expensive exotic ingredients to be doing it right.

Sadly this is possible when the general public is not being educated properly. Even our national nutritional council (Voedingscentrum) still keeps spouting how you should be consuming artificial margarine instead of real butter as it 'contains extra vitamin D' while butter from grass-fed cows will contain this naturally.

However, there is one truth that is universally embraced by almost everyone: in order to become healthier one has to consumer larger amounts of vegetables and fruits and less heavily processed foods. The sad truth is how most Dutch citizens don't even ingest 200 grams of vegetables and fruit on a given day, a far cry from the recommended 500 grams never mind the optimal 750 grams that is considered to be ideal when you're striving from longevity.

How do you recognize vitamin B deficiency?

Traditional media often run stories about how supplements may cause problems. One of the problems with studies highlighting supplements is they typically use synthetic vitamins, and not whole food supplements. Your body was not made to process unnatural agents, often posing as equivalents to the real thing. The reality is they are frequently not the same and do not provide you with the same health benefits.

Vitamin deficiencies may lead to illness and disease, and contribute to chronic issues such as high blood pressure, dementia and cancer. One nutritional deficiency having the potential to wreak havoc on your health, your cognition and even your respiratory system is a deficiency in vitamin B complex. B vitamins also help your body to detoxify from chronic exposure to pollutants and chemicals.

How to reduce stress with ASMR

Our brain is programmed to stress us. It does that a lot and on just about any subject. Like a lot of behavioral reactions, stress used to be and still is a survival mechanism that our brain used in order to inject alertness when needed. It’s there so we could harness internal resources and spring into action in a matter of seconds when hunted or hunting.

Fortunately for us, we rarely need to spring into action nowadays to avoid a prowling lion. Today, stress is not helpful and is often counter-productive. When stressed, most of us lose focus and are immersed in unpleasant feelings.

In the past, we needed all that “potential energy” when we faced fight or flight situations. It probably saved our lives more than once. Today, this energy still exists in each of us in certain situations; if it is not discharged via some sort of conduit (either physical or of a more neural nature), it slows us down.
That’s why we need to get creative in the way we release stress. We don’t have time to go on a vacation every week; often we even can’t step away from the almighty computer, tablet, or cell phone.

Pigmentation spots : why do we get them when we age?

Do you sometimes look down onto your arms and notice they are covered with white spots that resemble freckles in reverse?
Especially when arms get tanned in summer, these white spots tend to stand out more than ever.
This led me to the idea to look up what can be a cause of this weird pigmentation.

Mine turns out to be one called idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis (IGH), in other words, an unexplained teardrop-shaped lack of pigmentation, which is apparently very common among most people of over 40 years , but may also happen at a younger age. These white spots appear on the shins, legs, arms, and other sun-exposed areas of the body like the face, neck, and shoulders.

Apparently the body experiences a gradual reduction of melanoyctes and skin cells no longer produce pigment, a similar process that causes the graying of hair. The condition is also increasingly being seen in both sexes and darker skinned individuals with a history of long-term sun exposure, which has lead scientists to believe that excessive sun exposure and sun damage is another cause of these white spots.
They are generally 1 to 3 mm in size and commonly show up on the legs before progressing to other parts of the body.
These white spots are not caused by trauma or infection, nor do they indicate an increased risk of skin cancer.
Hereditary factors may be involved because this skin problem seems to run in families.

IGH is not related to vitiligo, in which melanin-producing cells called melanocytes die or are unable to function properly and no longer form melanin.

Other common causes of skin discolorations are

What determines attractiveness?

It is generally accepted as common knowledge how women will feel more sexually attracted to masculin men, but will take far more factors into account when they select future spouses, for which they prefer reliable men who will help raise her offspring.

Another assumption is how women will feel most attracted to masculin-looking men at the most fertile phase of their cycle.
In a recent study where women were shown masculinized and feminized faces of the same men, it was concluded that apparently there is no distinct phase in a women's cycle when they feel less or more attracted, but a bigger influence was whether or not they were in a phase of their life in which they desired to have kids.

When hearing about this study, I immediately wondered why they didn't mention attractiveness of body odour?
Would masculin men not also smell differently from feminine men? In a similar vein, they could have modulated a man's own smell by adding perfume that is perceived as masculin or feminine.

Whomever has followed threads on any perfume forum or has watched popular perfume reviews on Youtube will know that one of the most often asked questions by young and inexperienced men is, "what fragrance is a 'panty dropper'?" In other words, will this fragrance make me so irresistible that women will want to have sex with me?"

Timing of supplements

We frequently receive the question whether it really matters when to use a particular supplement.
Most supplements come with instructions to ingest them with a meal. This is in the assumption that meal contain fat, as fat will aid with absorption through the gut wall. Whether or not this can be your first meal of the day, depends on how much fat it contains. Especially fat-soluble vitamins, such as A,D, E and K need fat for proper absorption.
A work-around is to ingest them together with a larger amount of fish or krill oil softgels if your first meal doesn't contain enough fat.
Another reason take supplements with a meal, is that taking it by itself, can cause nausea or discomfort.

Why you should combine B12 with Biofolate

Jarrow Formulas Methyl-B12, Methylfolate Plus Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate (P5P) Lozenge combines the active forms of these vitamins to support DNA and neurotransmitter synthesis and amino acid metabolism. Homocysteine is converted to methionine by methylfolate and B12, or converted to cysteine by P5P-dependent enzymes. P5P is the biologically active form of vitamin B6.

Stronger with folic acid

For a very long time already, women that want to get pregnant, are advised to start taking folic acid or biofolate (the preferred form). Like-wise, seniors have started to take it as well, especially in combination with vitamin B12 in order to reduce homocystein levels.
In a new study it was concluded, folates give seniors stronger muscles too!

Declutter your life and feel liberated!

Have you ever looked around in your house upon coming home with a new purchase, to discover you can't find a suitable spot to put it away? Your new fancy mug can't be put up in the cupboard, because it is chockful of mugs and lovely tea cups already. Your new fancy dress can't be hung in the wardrobe as ther's no space left. Sounds familiar, huh?

Homocysteine: the real culprit

For the longest time we have been led to believe having a high cholesterol diet is dangerous for our health. This assumption was based on research done by Ancel Keys, who compared diets in seven hand-picked countries and concluded a diet low in animal fats (and cholesterol) was best for cardiovascular health.
This assumption started the war on saturated fats  and cholesterol in the mid-1950s  Soon doctors around the world were promoting a low fat, low cholesterol diet.
For the next three decades, millions of people gave up butter for margarine, drank low fat milk and diminished their egg intake.

How to repel mosquitoes

Rarely have people been so upset about mosquitoes as in this past week: a plague of mosquitoes seems to have arrived in the Netherlands and most surrounding countries.
The reason it is possible to have so many blood thirsty mosquitoes swarm around us, is that mosquito eggs incubate in water puddles as small as a rain gutter, cavities on flat roofs, empty plant pots or pet bowls.
In 14 days or less when it is very warm, larvae become fully grown adults, of which the females start searching for blood. The combination of a semi-monsoon in June and sudden tropical heat in July caused a mosquito 'babyboom'.
