The water-soluble B vitamins are collectively referred to as “B-Complex.” Each of the B vitamins has their own critical functions in the body, but many people have deficiencies in one or multiple B vitamins without even knowing it. This becomes of particular concern as we age. For instance, it is estimated that vitamin B12 deficiency affects up to 10–15% of the population over 60 years of age, usually due to inadequate dietary intake or impaired absorption. The use of the entire B-Complex is recommended since the individual B vitamins affect one another’s absorption, metabolism, and excretion.

B-complex and energy
Some of the B vitamins are facilitators of the energy-releasing reactions that occur in the mitochondria; others help build new cells to deliver the oxygen and nutrients that permit the energy pathways to run. Exercise stresses metabolic pathways that depend on vitamin B1 (thiamine), vitamin B2 (riboflavin), and vitamin B6 (pyridoxine).

More specifically, thiamine (B1) has been found to reduce the effects of catabolic (i.e., breaking down tissues) stress hormones which result from surgery.
Thiamine also protected the adrenal glands (the “stress glands”) from functional exhaustion.
Vitamin B5 (as calcium D-pantothenate) is intimately involved in adrenal function and the production of adrenal hormones associated with stress.

Pigmentation spots : why do we get them when we age?

Do you sometimes look down onto your arms and notice they are covered with white spots that resemble freckles in reverse?
Especially when arms get tanned in summer, these white spots tend to stand out more than ever.
This led me to the idea to look up what can be a cause of this weird pigmentation.

Mine turns out to be one called idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis (IGH), in other words, an unexplained teardrop-shaped lack of pigmentation, which is apparently very common among most people of over 40 years , but may also happen at a younger age. These white spots appear on the shins, legs, arms, and other sun-exposed areas of the body like the face, neck, and shoulders.

Apparently the body experiences a gradual reduction of melanoyctes and skin cells no longer produce pigment, a similar process that causes the graying of hair. The condition is also increasingly being seen in both sexes and darker skinned individuals with a history of long-term sun exposure, which has lead scientists to believe that excessive sun exposure and sun damage is another cause of these white spots.
They are generally 1 to 3 mm in size and commonly show up on the legs before progressing to other parts of the body.
These white spots are not caused by trauma or infection, nor do they indicate an increased risk of skin cancer.
Hereditary factors may be involved because this skin problem seems to run in families.

IGH is not related to vitiligo, in which melanin-producing cells called melanocytes die or are unable to function properly and no longer form melanin.

Timing of supplements

We frequently receive the question whether it really matters when to use a particular supplement.
Most supplements come with instructions to ingest them with a meal. This is in the assumption that meal contain fat, as fat will aid with absorption through the gut wall. Whether or not this can be your first meal of the day, depends on how much fat it contains. Especially fat-soluble vitamins, such as A,D, E and K need fat for proper absorption.
A work-around is to ingest them together with a larger amount of fish or krill oil softgels if your first meal doesn't contain enough fat.
