An Enhanced B-12 & Methyl Folate Lozenge
The Jarrow Formulas lozenge of Methyl B-12 + Methyl Folate + B6 (P-5-P) combines the more bioavailable and biologically active forms of the vitamins B6, B-12 and folate in one easy-to-take format.
Why B-12 Is Important
Methylcobalamin (methyl B-12) is the most bioavailable and best utilized form of vitamin B-12. It is well retained and is active without the need for conversion by the body, unlike other forms. Clinical studies have documented methyl B-12 efficacy in slowing the effects of aging on nerve tissue. Methyl B-12 also appears to help balance brain chemicals and promote neurotransmitter synthesis to improve communication between nerve cells. Studies also demonstrate B-12’s ability to reduce blood homocysteine levels, a pro-oxidant marker that has been linked to arterial injury and other health concerns. Methyl B-12 may also help with irregular sleep patterns, immune function and promoting normal cell growth. Finally, Methyl B-12 plays a strategic role in the production of oxygen-carrying blood cells.
Enhanced Neurological Activity & Reduced Homocysteine Levels
Only methyl B-12 initiates methylation, a process in which methyl (CH3) groups are donated to the myelin sheath that insulates nerve fibers and regenerates neurons. Methyl B-12 also helps synthesize neurotransmitters (e.g., serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine).
Via methylation, Methyl B-12 is a catalyst for the conversion of homocysteine to methionine, an essential amino acid. Similarly, it helps remove other toxins (e.g., arsenic) from the body.
Risk Factors for Vitamin B-12 Deficiency
Advancing age, medication, and diet are the primary risk factors for vitamin B-12 deficiency.
It is recommended that people over fifty consider supplements and vitamin B-12-fortified foods. Indeed, up to 40 percent of older individuals suffer from reduced stomach acid, which impairs absorption of protein-bound vitamin B-12. Medications for stomach ulcers, heartburn, or GERD inhibit gastric secretions, and impair vitamin B-12 absorption. Any disorder of the digestive tract may increase the risk for vitamin B-12 deficiency. The best sources of vitamin B-12 are animal products, such as meat, eggs, and fish. Therefore, strict vegetarians (those who eat no animal products) are at considerable risk. One study reported vitamin B-12 deficiency in 58% of vegetarians.
Folate (vitamin B9) deficiency leads to a type of anemia. In the 1960s, scientists further discovered that folate deficiency during pregnancy leads to neural tube defects, such as spina bifida and anencephaly, in newborns. In support of this finding, folate supplementation during pregnancy has been shown to reduce the risk of neural tube birth defects. However, taking folic acid only, especially in the synthetic form, may lead to a more pronounced B12-deficiency, which can lead to other birth defects of their own.
Similarly, folate is needed to support cardiovascular and neurologic health and proper cell division.
Folic Acid versus Folate
Folate is a generic name for a naturally occurring family of compounds containing a pteridine ring linked to p-aminobenzoic acid and containing a polyglutamate tail. The folates found in food consist of a partially bioactive mixture of folate polyglutamates, but these tend to readily degrade during harvesting, storage, and food processing. Up to three-quarters of initial folate activity may be lost. Synthetic folic acid, which is used for fortification, is much more stable because the pteridine ring is not reduced (is in the oxidized state); it also is devoid of the polyglutamate tail.
Concerns have been raised about the potential side effects associated with too much synthetic folic acid intake. In contrast, it is not generally believed that natural folates present such risk even at high levels of intake.
Folate → Dihydrofolate → Tetrahydrofolate ↔ Methylene-THF → Methylfolate (5-MTHF) Bioactive Form
The difference may stem from the biochemical conversion of folic acid to the bioactive form. In humans, the initial reaction is unusually sluggish. It takes place at < 2% the rate as in rats. And just as surprising, the activity of this enzyme can vary amongst humans by 500%. Natural folates, largely avoid this bottleneck since they are already partially on their way toward the bioactive form.
Quatrefolic®- 4th Generation Advantages
Dietary folate easily deteriorates and folic acid is susceptible to bottlenecks and impasses in the conversion to the bioactive form, especially in individuals with certain common genetic variations in metabolism. 5-MTHF itself overcomes one shortcoming by providing the bioactive form. Stabilizing 5-MTHF as the glucosamine salt leads to gains in both stability and bioavailability. Methyl Folate (5-MTHF) is the most biologically active form of folate. Quatrefolic® ((6S)-5-methyltetrahydrofolate glucosamine salt) is the 4th generation development in folate delivery.
Pyridoxal 5-Phosphate (P-5-P)
Pyridoxal 5-Phosphate (P-5-P) is the coenzyme form of vitamin B6 and is necessary for the metabolism of proteins and amino acids. Vitamin B6 is a cofactor in multiple enzyme systems in the body.
P-5-P) assists the reduction of homocysteine to methionine through the cystathionine pathway.
Jarrow Formulas’ Methyl B-12 / Methyl Folate Lozenge
Jarrow Formulas’ Methyl B-12 / Methyl Folate Lozenge provides Methyl B-12, Methyl Folate and Pyridoxal 5-Phosphate in a convenient lozenge form. Methyl B-12 is a readily-absorbed, highly bioavailable form of vitamin B-12 that helps maintain brain-health, vitality, levels of restful sleep and an enhanced mood. It also helps to detoxify homocysteine and other oxidants associated with aging. Methyl Folate is needed to support cardiovascular and neurologic health and proper cell division, especially in those with common genetic variations that limit its biosynthesis. Folate supplementation during pregnancy has been shown to reduce the risk of neural tube birth defects.
Some supplements are suitable for both men and women of all ages as well as children. But other supplements are specifically targeted to the aging woman or man. Another supplement is especially suitable for athletes, regardless of gender.

Low-dose radiation therapyLast week I listened to a Dutch podcast, which in general discusses news and politics, but for once, talked about low-dose radiatian therapy as a way to treat COVID-19. This made me curious enough that I wanted to find out more about this particular treatment method.
Most of us know at least one person, whos's been treated with high-dose radiation order to get rid of a malignant tumor. It is less well known that low dosages can be used as well and is used in some countries to treat inflammation disorders such as arthritis.
In general, this is met with disbelief as the official point of view is "all radiation is harmful" .
Proof to the contrary
Yet, over 3000 scientific research papers show that low dose irradiation is stimulatory and/or beneficial in a wide variety of microbes, plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates.
What causes grey hair? Can it be prevented or treated?
One of the results of a lockdown during the current COVID-19 pandemic was that all hair parlours were closed down and those of us, why rely on their hair being dyed by professional hair stylists, were confronted with their grey hair again.
Which made me want to uncover the various reasons why people get grey hair (in my case it was mostly B12-deficiency and stress) and whether grey hair can be prevented and/or treated.
Hair gets its colour from a type of pigment called melanin. The formation of melanin begins in the fetus. Hair gets two types of pigments: the dark pigments are called eumelanin, and light pigments are called pheomelanin. These two types of melanin pigments blend together to form different types of hair colour. Again, these pigments are positioned properly in the hair follicles. So, when hair starts growing, these pigments are absorbed in the hair to give it a particular colour.
Hair colouration is a systematized process. So, if there is a slight difference in the bodily system, the hair loses its colour which is then called as grey hair. Over the decades, the researchers are working hard to find a real solution for grey hair. Unfortunately, there is no specific remedy yet come out that can provide the ultimate solution against grey hair. On the other hand, people must have a clear understanding on why they get grey hair. It will help them to find out the reasons specific to grey hair. Here are some of the causes of grey hair:
Skin hunger: why we crave touch
As we are in the midst of the Easter Holiday, we can't help but feel sad. While Mother Nature is showing abundant signs of spring during a period of incredibly sunny weather, we are barely allowed to go outside other than to do what is absolutely necessary. Our gyms have been closed for almost a month now while in some countries, people aren't even allowed to exercise. Not just group exercise, but also to just jump on a bike and go for long rides.
While couples and families get grumpy from living together in a cramped space, others face different problems: they are living without any companion whatsoever. Therefore it's not a miracle how all of a sudden, pet asylums have been able to 'clear out' their list of unwanted pets. Not just because people have more time at hand to walk a dog (just about the only thing some are allowed to do) but also because they crave the ability to touch a living being, for lack of being able to touch another human.
Somehow, just like the sense of smell is overlooked, this also is true for the sense of touch. Only when we lose it, we crave it. This craving also is called 'touch hunger' or 'skin hunger'.
Heart disease: what are the differences between men and women?
Past week there was attention for new documentary called "De slag om het vrouwenhart", made by Hella de Jong, in which she relates about her quest for heart health. She suspected health problems, but wasn't sure why. After having been told her problems were psychosomatic, caused by her parents' traumatic WWII experiences, she wasn't satisfied and kept pushing for more research. Finally she got a massive heart attack while perfoming a stress test in the hospital.
This interview sent me on an immediate flashback to 1985, when my mom felt ill enough to visit the hopital after what was probably a minor heart attack. Her complaints weren't taken very seriously, yet they admitted her to hospital, though without being tied to a heart monitor. It was here she died that same day in the presence of my brother. When listening to Hella's story it seems there hasn't changed much in 35 years.
For a very long time, women were not taken into consideration when research was conducted on heart diseasae. Nor were they taken seriously when they went to their doctors with health complaints. Yet, among women, heart disease has also become the leading cause of death.
Determining heart disease risk in women
Women and men share many heart disease risk factors, but recent studies are showing what previous male-focused studies have not shown: Women also have their own unique heart disease risk factors.
Traditional risk factors common to both women and men:
- high blood pressure
- family history
- metabolic syndrome – the co-existence of high blood pressure, obesity, and high glucose and triglyceride levels
- high levels of C-reactive protein – a sign of inflammatory disease that can occur along with other cardiovascular risk factors
Some risk factors that relate specifically to women or that can affect women disproportionately include:
- relatively high testosterone levels prior to menopause
- increasing hypertension during menopause
- autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis – more common in women than in men
- stress and depression are more common among women
- low risk factor awareness: lack of recognition of many of the above conditions as risk factors for heart disease is a risk factor in itself
How do you recognize vitamin B deficiency?
Traditional media often run stories about how supplements may cause problems. One of the problems with studies highlighting supplements is they typically use synthetic vitamins, and not whole food supplements. Your body was not made to process unnatural agents, often posing as equivalents to the real thing. The reality is they are frequently not the same and do not provide you with the same health benefits.
Vitamin deficiencies may lead to illness and disease, and contribute to chronic issues such as high blood pressure, dementia and cancer. One nutritional deficiency having the potential to wreak havoc on your health, your cognition and even your respiratory system is a deficiency in vitamin B complex. B vitamins also help your body to detoxify from chronic exposure to pollutants and chemicals.
What determines attractiveness?
It is generally accepted as common knowledge how women will feel more sexually attracted to masculin men, but will take far more factors into account when they select future spouses, for which they prefer reliable men who will help raise her offspring.
Another assumption is how women will feel most attracted to masculin-looking men at the most fertile phase of their cycle.
In a recent study where women were shown masculinized and feminized faces of the same men, it was concluded that apparently there is no distinct phase in a women's cycle when they feel less or more attracted, but a bigger influence was whether or not they were in a phase of their life in which they desired to have kids.
When hearing about this study, I immediately wondered why they didn't mention attractiveness of body odour?
Would masculin men not also smell differently from feminine men? In a similar vein, they could have modulated a man's own smell by adding perfume that is perceived as masculin or feminine.
Whomever has followed threads on any perfume forum or has watched popular perfume reviews on Youtube will know that one of the most often asked questions by young and inexperienced men is, "what fragrance is a 'panty dropper'?" In other words, will this fragrance make me so irresistible that women will want to have sex with me?"
Misconceptions about drug abuse"Did you hear the news already? Rich Piana died last week!" exclaimed a good friend of ours. "Rich who??" was my response. Then it dawned on me he was speaking of the same person about whom I had been reading the other day and of which I only remembered his face and enormous physique.
Rich Piana, who had a large group of followers on Youtube and Instagram, as he had a most bizarre amount of muscles and was famous for his grueling workouts.
Almost immediately everyone assumed he probably died due to overuse of steroids and associated muscle-building products.
It is not so weird to assume this as the amount of bodybuilders, who haven't lived past 50 years is staggering, because of the ever more dangerous means of attaining a muscular physique that is bigger than that of other competitors in bodybuilding demand more lives every decade.
The burning desire to create even more muscle mass wins from common sense. When discussing his death people referred a very good documentary called:Bigger, Stronger and Faster. Yet, at a lower level, the sports of recreational bodybuilders, apparently is one of the safest sports around.
Why you should combine B12 with BiofolateJarrow Formulas Methyl-B12, Methylfolate Plus Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate (P5P) Lozenge combines the active forms of these vitamins to support DNA and neurotransmitter synthesis and amino acid metabolism. Homocysteine is converted to methionine by methylfolate and B12, or converted to cysteine by P5P-dependent enzymes. P5P is the biologically active form of vitamin B6.
Natural family planningIn the past week another birth control method came under fire for a brief moment: even the intrauterine device (IUD or coil) with the lowest amount of hormones when compared to the birth control PILL, has an oftentimes negative effect all over the body and is not 'just' effective locally. I was like, "duh, what else were you expecting?" .
Afterwards, the news disasppeared rapidly out of the headlines as of course, what else is to the disposition of a fertile woman, who likes to have sex, but doesn't like to get pregnant? A condom!
Indeed, a condom. But what if you have a steady and reliable partner, who isn't likely to get a STD, then it is quite something to always be using 'that' contraption.
Stronger with folic acidFor a very long time already, women that want to get pregnant, are advised to start taking folic acid or biofolate (the preferred form). Like-wise, seniors have started to take it as well, especially in combination with vitamin B12 in order to reduce homocystein levels.
In a new study it was concluded, folates give seniors stronger muscles too!
Big Pharma prevented research into homocysteinMoney-hungry pharmaceutical companies prevented ongoing research into the impoortance of the amino acid homocystein for the development of cardiovascular diseases. The vitamins that can lower homocystein levels are so cheap that it is not possible to make a profit on them. This is what the scientific journalist Emily Yoffe wrote in an older article (2002)
Homocysteine: the real culpritFor the longest time we have been led to believe having a high cholesterol diet is dangerous for our health. This assumption was based on research done by Ancel Keys, who compared diets in seven hand-picked countries and concluded a diet low in animal fats (and cholesterol) was best for cardiovascular health.
This assumption started the war on saturated fats and cholesterol in the mid-1950s Soon doctors around the world were promoting a low fat, low cholesterol diet.
For the next three decades, millions of people gave up butter for margarine, drank low fat milk and diminished their egg intake.
