The prostate is a gland that surrounds the urethra just below the bladder in men. There are a number of conditions that can affect the prostate. Some of these include prostatitis, or inflammation of the prostate, BPH (Benign Prostate Hyperplasia) – an enlarged prostate, and prostate cancer. Various nutrients and natural compounds have been shown to help reduce and prevent these conditions, and to help maintain prostate health.
An Effective Combination
Advanced Prostate Relief is composed of superior ingredients for the support of prostate health. These ingredients include broccoli extract, lycopene, selenium, green tea extract, zinc and pterostilbene. This superior formula helps to lower PSA levels, protect the prostate from inflammation and DNA damage, and reduce the risk of prostate cancer.
The ingredients in Advanced Prostate Relief are especially well established for the abilities to help reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Higher lycopene intake, for example, has been linked to a significantly reduced risk of prostate cancer. Broccoli extract, selenium and green tea extract are also well known for their cancer fighting properties.
Prostate health is a major concern for all men, especially as they get older. More than 30 million men suffer from prostate conditions that negatively affect their quality of life. These prostate conditions include an enlarged prostate (BPH), prostatitis and prostate cancer.
Over 50% of men in their 60’s and as many as 90% of men in their 70’s and older have symptoms of BPH. Prostatitis can affect men at all ages, but is especially common in older men, affecting 35% of men over 50. The most serious prostate condition is prostate cancer. Each year 230,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and 30,000 will die of it. The good news is that there are many natural products that can help to reduce the symptoms of prostate problems, as well as reduce the risk of developing them in the first place.
Lycopene is an antioxidant found in tomatoes which has been researched extensively for its benefits for prostate health and association with a reduced risk of prostate cancer. One study examining the dietary intake and incidence of prostate cancer in a group of approximately 44,000 individuals over the course of six years found that individuals with the highest intake of lycopene had a significantly reduced risk of developing prostate cancer compared to those with the lowest intake. The results showed an almost 35% lower risk for individuals consuming 10 or more servings of tomato products per week, with the protective effects being strongest in cases of more advanced prostate cancer. These results were not observed for any other carotenoid, including retinol and beta-carotene.
Lycopene has also been shown to be effective in the treatment of hormone refractory metastatic prostate cancer. Supplementation with lycopene for 3 months resulted in reduced or stabilized PSA levels in 85% of patients. Furthermore, lower urinary tract symptoms and bone pain were improved in 61% and 62% of patients respectively.
The consumption of leafy green vegetables has been associated with a reduced incidence of cancer. Glucoraphanin glucosinolate and sulforaphane are natural compounds found in broccoli that have been shown to inhibit tumor formation and support healthy detoxification. They are potent inducers of phase II detoxification enzymes, which are the enzymes in the liver responsible for the detoxification of toxins and carcinogens. Enhanced Phase II detoxification greatly assists the body in reducing the overall toxic burden. The most widely studied aspect of sulforaphane is its potential as an anti-cancer agent. Broccoli’s anti-cancer effects are attributed to the stimulation of phase II enzymes, apoptosis (cell suicide), cell cycle arrest (preventing replication), reduction of the spread of tumours (metastases) and the inhibition of the blood supply to cancer cells (angiogenesis).
Selenium and Zinc
Zinc and selenium are both important minerals for prostate health, and both have powerful antioxidant properties. Zinc is of particular importance to the prostate, where it is present in high concentrations. Prostate cancer has been associated with decreased levels of zinc in malignant prostate cells. Zinc and selenium are key minerals in the maintenance and repair of DNA. Selenium has a well-established reputation as a potent cancer-fighting trace mineral. One study showed that men taking a daily 200 microgram selenium supplement experienced a 37% lower risk of developing new cancer, and a whopping 50% lower risk of cancer death.
Green Tea Extract (EGCG)
Prostate specific antigen (PSA) is a glycoprotein secreted by the prostate gland. The most common cause for an elevated PSA is BPH, but PSA is a measurement for prostate cancer as well. EGCG has been shown to decrease PSA levels for up to 2-4 weeks after a single administration. EGCG is also a powerful antioxidant, and is well known for its anti-cancer activity. Green tea extracts have been found to protect animals from existing, spontaneous prostate cancer.
