Jarrow Formulas CalMag provides both calcium and magnesium as well as vitamin D, all important for optimal bone and cardiovascular health

Vitamin D is essential for intestinal calcium and phosphorous absorption. Ergocalciferol is a vegetarian form of vitamin D.

Magnesium works with calcium and other minerals in bone formation. Moreover, it is involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions, including in energy (ATP) production, as well as cardiac and smooth muscle contractions.

Adequate calcium and vitamin D as part of a healthful diet, along with physical activity, may reduce the risk of osteoporosis later in life.

background reading

As two of most abundant and essential macro minerals in the human body and skeleton, adequate intake of calcium and magnesium is essential for optimal bone health. Studies have shown that supplementing calcium and magnesium together promotes healthy bone mineral density and bone size by supporting normal bone metabolism. Since magnesium is a natural calcium channel blocker, the mineral should be taken with calcium to reduce calcified deposits. Jarrow Formulas’ CaMag contains 500 IU of Vitamin D2, 500 mg calcium with 250 mg of magnesium as citrate/malate blends, which have been documented to be highly absorbable and well-tolerated.

Naturally found in nuts, seeds, dark green leafy vegetables, and dairy products, calcium is essential for the maintenance of healthy bones, as well as cardiovascular health. Supplementation of calcium has long been shown to be beneficial for bone health in everyone from children to the elderly. Meta-analyses of studies on calcium and bone mass demonstrate that supplementation of 500 to 1500 mg of calcium daily improves bone health across gender and age groups. In a double-blind, 2 year, randomized, controlled trial of 323 healthy men around age 40, bone health markers were found to increase at all sites among the group receiving 1200 mg/day of calcium, by 1% to 1.5% more than those receiving placebo.

Calcium Citrate and Malate
As a naturally-occurring organic compound, malic acid, a key component of calcium and magnesium citrate/malate in Jarrow Formulas’ CalMag, is concentrated in apples, watermelon, plums, lychees, and cherries. At equal amounts, calcium/malate yields greater fractional absorption than milk or calcium carbonate. Calcium citrate/malate’s bioavailability stems from its water solubility and dissolution: When dissolved, it releases calcium ions and a calcium citrate complex such that calcium ions are absorbed directly into intestinal cells, and the citrate complex enters the body through paracellular absorption.

In a study of 11 and 12- year-old girls given 500 mg calcium as citrate/ malate or placebo for 18 months, plus 960 mg dietary calcium daily, significantly greater gains in lumbar spine mineralization and total body bone health were found among those given calcium citrate/ malate. A randomized trial of 45 pairs of identical twins, in which one twin received 700 mg calcium as citrate/malate and the other twin, a placebo, found significant gains in bone health in the supplemented children at all six sites (measured after 3 years). In another study, 389 men and women over 65 years of age given 500 mg calcium as calcium citrate/malate and 700 I.U. vitamin D, or placebo for three years found the supplement supported total body bone mass in both sexes and led to a significant improvement in bone strength.

Researchers estimate that the average person’s body contains about 25 grams of magnesium, about half of which is in the bones. The mineral participates in 300-350 enzymatic reactions in nearly all the body’s tissues. Naturally found in seaweed, green leafy vegetables, beans, nuts and seeds, magnesium supports proper growth and maintenance of bones, promotes nerve and muscle health, promotes normal levels of stomach acid and elimination of stool. Low levels of magnesium have been associated with loss of bone density. In a prospective cohort study of 73,684 women enrolled in the Women’s Health Initiative Observational Study, lower magnesium intake was associated with unwanted changes in bones of the hip and whole body. In an animal study, a 50% reduced intake of magnesium caused lower bone mineral content, especially in the distal femur. Researchers hypothesized that the changes may be related to altered PTH and 1,25(OH)(2)-vitamin D formation or action, and to an increased release of substance P, a neuropeptide which has been shown to amplify bone growth, and the inflammatory cytokines TNF alpha and IL-1beta.

Supports Normal Levels Of Inflammation
Magnesium levels are also important for maintaining normal levels of inflammation in the body and maintaining healthy cardiovascular markers. Low levels of magnesium impact the secretion and the activity of parathyroid hormone as well as markers of inflammation. In a study of the NHANES data on children aged 6-17, those with adequate levels of magnesium were more likely to have normal C-reactive protein values. Likewise, among adults, those with intakes below the RDA were more likely to have elevated levels of CRP.

Magnesium + Malate
Together with malate, magnesium plays a critical role in ATP production under aerobic and hypoxic conditions. Magnesium malate has been shown in the research to improve discomfort and tenderness in patients with musculoskeletal and connective tissue discomfort. A previous study found that among 15 patients given 1200-2400 mg malate plus 300-600 mg magnesium for an average of 8 weeks, tender point index (TPI) scores were reduced after an average of 4 and 8 weeks on the magnesium malate combination, with subjective symptom improvement occurring within 48 hours of supplementation.

Jarrow Formulas’ CalMag provides both calcium and magnesium as highly absorbable citrate malate, together with vitamin D2, for optimal bone health benefits. The excellent absorption of both calcium and magnesium as citrate malate ensures the healthy deposit of minerals along with additional benefits for maintaining already healthy levels of inflammation and energy production.
