A few weeks ago, a new customer asked me for advice what type of protein powder would best fit her needs. When I tried to explain the differences between the various types of protein I realized to never really have published an in-depth comparison between all of the types of protein.
In the end I told her, the most what matters is that you keep using it because it tastes good! At least, that's the case for most of us, who simply struggle to get in enough protein while trying to eat an adequate amount of calories. This can be true for both people who need to lose weight and want to maximize the amount of protein as well as those who have trouble gaining weight because they are recovering from illness, have a naturally low appetite or simply have a higher calorie demand due to exercise or work.

At first my idea was to discuss every single protein source between fast absorbing amino acids up to slow-release casein protein, but that would be too big of a project, even though it's exactly where we started way back in 2005 with our own webshop in which we offered isolated leucine, Branched Chain Amino Acids and the best tasting micellar casein powder ever!

For now, let's focus on three different types of whey protein powder: concentrate, isolate and hydrolysate and explain the key differences between those powders and why you may be interested in using either of those three.
Instead of presenting you all three of them at the same time, there are two parts.
In the first part whey concentrate and whey isolate are compared to each other.
In the second part we compare whey isolates with whye hydrolysates and explain when either of them may be your best choice.

Whey Protein Isolate versus Whey Protein Concentrate: what's the difference and why should you use either of them?

These days, it feels like everyone in the health and nutrition space is preaching to eat more protein, and for good reason. The benefits of increasing protein intake range from building lean muscle to enhancing mealtime satiety, aiding fat loss, and supporting healthy aging.

Whether you just finished an endurance run, or pumped some iron in the gym, meeting your post-workout protein needs is a big deal. And while you can meet your needs through whole foods alone, sometimes it’s just not realistic because, well, life gets in the way. Thankfully protein supplements are ready to fill in the gaps and help you reach your fitness goals and boost protein intake.

Whey protein is considered at the top of the leaderboard among the other types of protein powders, but did you know there are three types of whey protein?

Whey concentrate is the most common form of whey protein, but there’s also whey protein isolate and hydrolyzed whey protein. If the words isolate and hydrolyzed are making you wonder if you need a science degree to decode protein powders, you may benefit from reading this blog article.

Each type of protein offers their own benefits, so what form of whey protein is the best whey protein? Let's first explain what whey protein really is.

What is whey protein?

When cow’s milk is processed to make cheese, enzymes are added to separate the curds from the liquid. Those curds go on to become delicious cheese, but the remaining liquid is a pretty coveted by-product, whey protein!

Only about 20% of milk’s proteins are whey proteins, while the other 80% are casein. Both are considered high-quality proteins, but whey tends to be more beneficial for producing lean muscle mass. Hence, it’s frequently used in popular protein supplements.

The liquid whey is strained and then heated to evaporate the water content. What’s left behind is dehydrated whey protein, which is used to make gold standard whey protein powder. The dried whey then undergoes additional processing to make one of three different types of whey protein:
  1. Whey protein concentrate (WPC)
  2. Whey protein isolate (WPI)
  3. Hydrolyzed whey protein, also known as whey protein hydrolysate  (WPH) or predigested whey
These whey proteins differ in their manufacturing process and nutrition content.

Because there are several steps involved in whey production, the product has different variations. The most common forms of whey protein are whey isolate and whey concentrate. Knowing the difference between the two can help you maximize your protein intake as you work towards those fitness goals.

Differences between whey protein isolate (WPI) and whey protein concentrate (WPC)

There are several differences between whey isolate and whey concentrate, but the main difference is how they’re processed. We already know that liquid whey is collected as a by-product during the cheese-making process.
From there, the liquid whey is dried, leaving behind whey concentrate powder.
This whey protein powder comprises up to 80% protein by weight.

However, that concentrate can undergo further processing and filtration to reduce its fat and carbohydrate content even more. The remaining product is whey isolate, comprised of at least 90% protein by weight.

So to keep it simple: whey protein isolate has more grams of protein than the same measured scoop of whey concentrate. And, of course, that means it has less carbs and fat than whey concentrate.

Plus, these additional filtration steps remove lactose, so whey isolate has a lower lactose content than whey concentrate. Still, both forms of whey protein are usually acceptable in a lactose-intolerant diet.

Benefits of whey protein isolate versus whey protein concentrate

While whey isolate has a higher protein content than whey concentrate, both are considered complete proteins. Both forms of whey protein contain all nine essential amino acids, including the ever-important branched-chain amino acids, or BCAAs, needed for muscle gain.

Both whey isolate and concentrate improve muscle growth and strength. Regimented whey protein intake after exercise helped maintain a greater whole-body protein balance, thus enhancing exercise recovery.

Specific health benefits of each type are

Whey protein isolate (WPI)

Whey protein isolate can help build muscle and promote muscle recovery when combined with a well-balanced diet and regular physical activity. It provides the amino acids, needed for muscle protein synthesis and the addition of fat-free mass.

Since whey protein isolate undergoes more rigorous filtration, it is low in fat, carbohydrate, and lactose content.

Whey protein concentrate (WPC)


While the lower fat and carbohydrate content in whey isolate may benefit some people, the higher numbers in whey concentrate may benefit others. If you need help meeting all of your macronutrient needs, whey protein concentrate has got you covered.

The average scoop of whey protein concentrate will not contain as much protein as a whey isolate, but you’ll get more carbs and fat. Plus, with more fat and carbohydrate content, it offers a more creamy, desirable flavor. And it’s still rich in the BCAAs that can help promote muscle protein synthesis.

Which one should you choose?

Whey protein isolate undergoes a more intensive filtration process than whey protein concentrate. As a result, it has a higher protein content than its concentrate counterparts. So, how does that influence your choice?

Well, you’ll find less fat and fewer grams of carbs in whey protein isolate, so that may be the better choice for those on a low-carb or low-fat diet or those with weight loss goals. And while both options are typically considered OK for those with lactose intolerance, whey isolate tends to be lower in lactose. It may be the better option for those who have more severe lactose intolerance.

Along the same lines, whey isolate is often considered easier to digest than whey concentrate. Still, like any other protein, whey protein of any kind will be absorbed and used throughout the whole body.

However, don’t discount the importance of carbs and fat when it comes to whey. If you’re searching for the tastiest option, whey protein concentrate might be your safest bet.
The higher carb and fat content gives whey concentrate a creamy, milk-like flavor. It can kick your protein shakes and smoothies up a notch.

And if you’re comparing prices, whey concentrate tends to be a little easier on the wallet. You can take advantage of those peptide benefits and stay on budget.

Summing up Whey Protein Isolate versus Concentrate

Because whey protein is made up of several fast-digesting proteins, it’s a common ingredient in many different protein supplements. Both whey concentrate and isolate proteins are commonly found in protein bars, shakes, and powders, and both can support your fitness goals. Looking at the big picture, both can help you reach your fitness goals. It’s the slight variation in their nutrition profiles that may sway your decision one way or the other.

Now the difference between concentrate and isolate has been explained, let's focus on the difference between isolate and hydrolysate.

Production of Whey Protein Isolate (WPI) versus Whey Protein Hydrolysate (WPH)

Whey concentrate is filtered to remove some fat and carbs, thereby “concentrating” the protein content. Whey isolate goes through an extra filtration process to remove even more fat and carbs.

Hydrolyzed whey is most commonly made from whey isolate. The isolate undergoes the scientific process of hydrolysis, which is treatment with heat, acid, or enzymes to break down the bonds holding proteins together.

Think of it this way: hydrolysis is like digestion. It breaks the proteins down into smaller pieces, called peptides, that can be digested easier due to their faster absorption rate.

Key similarities between isolate and hydrolysate

Let´s break down what these two protein forms have in common.

Macronutrient content

Both forms of whey contain similar amounts of carbs, fat, and protein. It’s common to see hydrolyzed whey described as having all of the carbohydrates and fat removed, essentially leaving behind pure protein. That’s not exactly the deal.

Hydrolysis only acts on proteins, so unless a hydrolyzed whey is additionally processed to remove more macronutrients, it will contain the same amount of carbs, fat, and lactose as the isolate it was made from.

Some isolates and hydrolyzed whey products contain zero fat or carbs, while others may list 1 to 2 grams per serving.
Even if it’s only a couple of grams, the macronutrient content may be an important factor if you’re trying to lose or gain body weight or are following strict macro ratios, like on a keto diet, so be sure to read the label.

Lactose content

The extra filtration that removes carbohydrates from these proteins also removes the majority of lactose. Lactose is a naturally occurring sugar found in dairy milk.

People with lactose intolerance have a hard time digesting lactose, resulting in digestive issues like bloating, gas, and diarrhea. Although whey isolate and hydrolyzed whey contain very small amounts of lactose, they’re considered easier to digest for folks with extreme lactose sensitivity.

High protein by weight

Both whey isolate and hydrolyzed whey contain more protein by weight than whey concentrate. Whey isolate contains at least 90% protein by weight compared to concentrate, which can range from 50% to 80% protein content.

The reason for this is the extra filtration whey isolate and hydrolyzed whey go through. Removing most of the fat and carbs from whey isolate concentrates the protein content. Hydrolyzed whey has the same protein content because it’s made from isolate.

A serving of whey isolate or hydrolyzed whey will contain more protein than a same-size scoop of concentrate.

Complete protein

All types of whey protein are complete proteins, meaning they contain all nine essential amino acids. Complete proteins are considered high-quality proteins.

Essential amino acids are the ones our bodies can’t make on their own and need to come from food. You need essential amino acids for normal maintenance and repair of tissues, so you can imagine how important they are for increasing muscle strength and size.

Contains BCAAs

Because whey isolate and hydrolyzed whey are complete proteins, they’re natural sources of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs). BCAAs are considered some of the most important amino acids for muscle health and exercise performance.
Leucine, in particular, has been linked to enhanced muscle protein synthesis, improved workout recovery, and more muscular endurance during exercise.

Bioavailability

The amino acids in all forms of whey protein are considered highly bioavailable. Bioavailability simply refers to how much of a substance—in this case, protein—your body can absorb and put to use. Whey isolate and hydrolyzed whey are highly absorbable proteins.

Marketing wants you to believe that products labeled 100% hydrolyzed whey are more bioavailable than any other whey form, which isn’t accurate.

Hydrolyzed protein tastes bitter, so the higher the percentage of hydrolyzed protein, the worse the end product will taste. Most importantly, studies have found the more hydrolyzed whey is, the less bioavailable it becomes.

So, products claiming 100% hydrolyzed whey as the sole protein source will have the same bioavailability as 100% whey isolate.

Key differences between whey protein isolate (WPI) and whey protein hydrolysate (WPH)

Allergenicity

The proteins in milk trigger an immune response in people with diagnosed milk allergies. Studies have found that hydrolyzed proteins, like hydrolyzed whey, are less likely to trigger allergic reactions in people with milk protein allergies.

Some people with a milk allergy may be able to tolerate hydrolyzed whey, not whey isolate. Hydrolyzed whey is still a product made from milk, though, so you should check with a doctor before trying it if you have a milk allergy.

Digestion

The intention of hydrolyzed whey is to be digested and absorbed faster than other types of whey protein. It makes sense: the proteins have been broken down to some extent, so your body has to do less work to digest them.

Whey protein is already a fast-acting protein, so the edge hydrolyzed may provide is minimal. More research is needed to compare the digestion rate of hydrolyzed whey versus whey isolate. The existing studies have found that hydrolyzed whey is digested slightly faster or at about the same rate as whey isolate.

Which is better for ….

Let’s take a look at how these two proteins can benefit the following fitness goals.

Muscle building and muscle gain

Studies have found both types of whey may help you gain muscle and increase muscle strength when paired with resistance training. Most of the research studying the effect of whey protein on muscle protein synthesis uses whey protein isolate as the variable, so it’s a great choice if you want the most researched-backed form of protein.

Weight loss

All forms of whey may help support weight loss. Isolate and hydrolyzed are better choices than concentrate for weight loss because they contain fewer calories, fat, and carbs per serving.

Recovery

Studies have found all forms of whey may speed up recovery, whether taken before or after a workout. However, hydrolyzed whey may be the better choice to support post-workout recovery if you subscribe to the theory of timed nutrition.

There’s some debate on the concept of when you refuel after exercise. The thirty minutes immediately following your workout is often called the anabolic window. The idea is that when your muscles are depleted from exercise, your body will more efficiently use whatever nutrition you provide during that window.

On the other hand, many fitness and nutrition professionals say the overall quality of your diet and the total amount of protein you eat daily are more important.

Who should use whey protein isolate?

Whey protein isolate is ideal for anyone who wants to add more protein to their daily total. Products made with whey protein isolate tend to contain more protein per serving than products containing whey concentrate. Those extra grams of protein can be important for bodybuilders, athletes, and anyone trying to grow muscle.

Isolate is also a good choice for anyone who wants to increase protein intake while keeping carbs and fat low, such as calorie-controlled diets for weight loss and low-carb or ketogenic diets. Be sure to read the ingredients and the supplement facts to check the calories and macronutrient amounts for a serving of protein.

Whey protein isolate may be worth trying if you have mild lactose intolerance or have had trouble digesting whey protein concentrate since it contains less lactose than whey concentrate and may be tolerated better. Read the ingredients before buying since many whey isolate products occasionally contain whey concentrate.

Who should use hydrolyzed whey?

Hydrolyzed whey offers the same benefits as whey isolate, with a few differences.

As mentioned above, the efficacy of post-workout nutrition timing is up for debate. Still, many gym-goers swear by downing a protein shake immediately after exercising. The extra-fast digestibility rate of hydrolyzed whey may appeal to athletes who want every advantage they can get.

Because the hydrolyzed protein is predigested, it may be a better choice for individuals with food sensitivities, allergies, or other digestive issues, like irritable bowel syndrome or following gastric surgery.

Of course, individuals with medical concerns should speak with a doctor before experimenting with any protein powder.

How to choose the right whey for your situation

Choose whey concentrate if:

+ You tolerate dairy products well
+ You want the best value for money
+ You’re not severely restricting calories
+ You prefer better-tasting protein
+ You’re on any kind of budget
+ You want to retain beneficial milk compounds

This applies to 80-90% of people reading this.

Choose whey isolate if:

+ You have mild to moderate lactose intolerance and concentrate causes issues
+ You’re in an aggressive calorie deficit and every calorie matters
+ You want maximum protein per scoop
+ You’re willing to pay 30-50% more for 10-20% more protein per serving
+ You’ve tried concentrate and experienced digestive problems

This applies to 10-15% of people.

Choose whey hydrolysate if:
+ You have severe digestive issues with both concentrate and isolate
+ You have diagnosed dairy allergies (not just lactose intolerance)
+ You’re an elite athlete with multiple daily training sessions
+ You have money to spare and want every minor advantage
+ You have medical conditions requiring extremely easy-to-digest protein

This applies to <5% of people.

Special circumstances

For lactose intolerance:
* mild: try concentrate first; many tolerate it fine
* moderate: go with isolate
* severe: consider hydrolysate or plant-based alternatives

For fat loss:
* Concentrate is fine; just track the calories
* Isolate makes calorie budgeting slightly easier but isn’t necessary
* Hydrolysate is overkill

For muscle gain:
* all three are equally effective
* choose based on budget and taste preference
* concentrate provides best value

For sensitive digestion:
* start with concentrate
* if issues persist, try isolate
* only consider hydrolysate if both others cause problems

After analyzing the research, comparing costs, and considering real-world application, for 90% of people: buy whey concentrate. It’s effective, affordable, tastes good, and builds just as much muscle as the expensive options.

The only exceptions: if concentrate genuinely causes digestive issues, try isolate.
If you have severe lactose intolerance and isolate still causes problems, consider hydrolysate or plant-based alternatives.
Don’t fall for marketing hype claiming you “need” expensive isolate or hydrolysate for optimal results. The research doesn’t support it.

Ultimately, the best protein is the one you’ll consistently use — taste and tolerance matter most.
